Throughout this time, we have seen the growing passion and dedication with which not only ourselves, but also our local counterparts, have supported this football club. Therefore, it goes without saying that we release this statement not keeping in mind what we believe to be the best for us, but keeping in mind what we believe to be the best for the Football Club. We are thoroughly disappointed with the recent reports that the club will be renamed 上海海港足球俱乐部。While the importance of the Shanghai Port is immeasurable to the city and its history, we do not believe that the new name of the club will be beneficial. We believe that it clearly neglects the fans’ opinions and experiences by forcing the creation of a new club name that never had any relationship to the club in the first place. A club name not only represents the club, but also gives pride to its most important aspect: The fans. The fans want a name that they believe represents the team’s history, the city, and themselves. 上海海港足球俱乐部 is not this name. While it represents the city’s history, this name has nothing to do with the fans, nor has it got anything to do with the club’s history. Furthermore, the name is directly connected to the SIPG company through the 上海海港newspaper. While we are grateful for the support that the SIPG company has given our club over the past years, we are not SIPG’s football club. We are the fans’ football club, we are Chongming’s football club, and we are Shanghai’s football club. We believe that these aspects should be incorporated into our club’s new name. Furthermore, we are disappointed in the lack of fan involvement during this moment that will be so important for the club’s history. A club without its roots is nothing, and the roots of a club are its fans. Regardless of a what has happened and what will happen, a football team will always have one (and only) constant: its fans. There will be a day when Gu Jinshan will leave. There will be a day when Cai Huikang and Yan Junling will retire. There will be a day when Oscar returns to Brazil. In a football club, people, stadiums, and trophies all come and go. Only the fans stay, and they are therefore the constant and the soul which keeps a football club alive. Therefore, we ask that you listen to what we have to say, and that you choose a name that represents this club and all that it stands for. The company that owns this club does not define it. We want a name that represents all that this club stands for – its fans, its city, and its history. Our club board members have been given the honor to represent a club that has quickly grown into a Chinese football giant. This is a job that many fans would love to have, but do not have the opportunity. Therefore, it is the board members’ obligation to defend the club and the fans in the best way possible.我们不是海港队，我们就是上海队！
