BERLIN(Reuters) - A Chinese remake of the American thriller "Blood Simple"probably could not have been made two decades ago because ofrestrictions on filmmakers at the time, director Zhang Yimou said onSunday.
The Chinese directorsaid he was a huge fan of the 1985 neo-noir crime film by the Coenbrothers about murder and infidelity ever since seeing it at a festival.
Zhangtold a news conference after his film "San Qiang Pai An Jing Qi" ("AWoman, A Gun and a Noodle Shop") had an enthusiastic reception at theBerlin Film Festival that Joel and Ethan Coen wrote him to say theyenjoyed his entertaining version.
"Itcertainly was much more restricted 20 years ago," Zhang said. "As adirector you couldn't do what you wanted. You had to think about whatkind of story you could tell. China is opening up."
Headded: "There's a lot of diversity now, a lot of genres. It's not like10 or 20 years ago when Chinese cinema was very, very restricted. Nowthere are lots of directors with different styles. For me this was anattempt at a new genre. The market for this particular film genre iscertainly there."
Zhang's filmis set in the imperial age in a desert town near Jiayu Pass not farfrom the Great Wall. An unpleasant middle-aged man named Wang runs anoodle shop with his wife and their staff.
Wang learns his wife is having an affair with a shy cook and arranges to have them both killed.
Thehit man ends up shooting Wang after collecting his fee and then becomesentangled in the story, which includes hilarious attempts to dispose ofdead bodies.
"Blood Simple" was set in a Texas town where the bar manager is suspected of having an affair with the wife of his boss.
"The first time I saw 'Blood Simple' I liked it immediately," Zhang said. "It was a very cool film."
Zhangsaid he had never met the Coen brothers but was in touch with themabout the remake. He said he was delighted they sent him an email afterseeing a copy of his film.
"Igot an email from them. I was very, very touched. They'd seen the filmand they said they loved the remake. They said it was very amusing.They took the trouble to write and say they loved the way I changedthings. I was very pleased by that."

张艺谋的这部“三枪拍案惊奇”（一个女人， 一把枪和一个面馆的故事）在柏林电影节上受到了热情的接待， 张艺谋之后透露科恩兄弟特地写信给他， 声称很喜欢他的这个搞笑版本。
“20多年前当然就会有很多限制，”张说：“那时 作为导演， 你不能拍你想要的作品。你一定要考虑你能讲哪个类型的故事。 中国现在开放了。”
他还补充道：“现在的中国是百家齐放， 电影类别多样化。 绝不像10或20年前那样， 中国电影局限非常多。 现在许多导演尝试不同的拍摄风格。 对我来说， 这部电影是探索新的拍摄类型的一种尝试。 而对这类特殊电影类型是很有市场的。

张艺谋的这部电影场景取于长城附近的嘉峪关-封建王朝时期一个废弃的城镇。一个阴郁的中年王姓老板与妻子和伙计开了一个面馆。王老板得知妻子和一个羞怯的厨子有染， 决定安排人杀掉他们两个。 杀手结果在领取佣金后杀死了王老板， 于是情节变得扑朔迷离， 其中包括他如何处置死尸的可笑尝试。
“血疑宫”场景被定在得克萨斯的一个小镇， 一个酒吧经理怀疑妻子和他的老板有染。
“我第一次看到“血疑宫”我就立刻喜欢上了它， ”张说：“电影非常棒。”
张说他从未见过肯恩兄弟， 但曾经就改编事宜和他们联络过。
“他们给我发了个电邮， 我非常， 非常感动。 他们说已经看过电影而且非常喜欢改编的版本， 非常有趣。 他们亲自写信说喜爱我改编的部分， 我也非常高兴。”
