Writing an Essay Outline

Writing an outline for a university paper is a must. Think of the outline as a ‘business plan’. Without a plan, any venture or undertaking, including an essay, will lack direction, and at worse, fail.
University students are expected to know how to write an outline and should have the skill of writing an outline prior to entering university. The benefit is clear; it will make writing the essay much more efficient and will allow you to focus on conducting research (and thinking) much more methodically. An outline can also help generate new thoughts and most importantly, allows you to map out your logic.
Even for an IELTS task 2 essay, examinees should write a small outline!
Outline Elements
Thesis or Paper Statement: The statement will be relatively short, just one to two sentences only, and will sit at the top of your outline (and paper). The statement focuses directly on the subject and what the argument is, but be sure not to be overly subjective or opinionated. Too opinionated and you risk insulting, offending, or otherwise ‘putting off the reader’.
Roman numeral I: This will be your “Introduction”. In the introduction, you should inform the reader what your paper is about and tell what your paper hopes to prove (your thesis). An introduction gives an overview of the topic and your thesis statement.
The last Roman numeral used will be your “Conclusion”. In the conclusion, you should summarize what you have told your reader along with giving a final concluding statement. One very important rule for a conclusion is not to include any new information. In other words, your reader should already know all information presented in the conclusion.
Regardless of the type of logic used, they all have one thing in common; the reader MUST be able to follow your logic. Never leave the reader in the dark and always make sure the reader knows the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of the logic behind the paper’s direction.
