DAY 6 Final day Here we are. My last day in Beijing. I got up around 600a to go for a swim. If I knew what was ahead at the Great Wall, I may have saved my legs. It was a rainy day and we drove almost two hours to get to a portion of the Great Wall. The Great Wall is more than 12,000 kilometers long. As they said to me, longer from Baltimore to Los Angeles and Los Angeles back to Baltimore. We had our umbrellas and started a two plus hour trek. We went so high that the security guards and the media photographers couldn’t even stay with us. Parts were so steep that our calves started to burn. Our bodyguard Joe nearly didn’t make it. On the drive back, we were so hungry we asked the driver to find a McDonalds. American food tasted good after so much exotic food and dim sum. We ordered bags full of food. When we got back to downtown Beijing, we went to a famous market, called Silk Street. It was crazy! So many people, and so much stuff, and you had to negotiate for everything It was first experience in negotiating, and I think I’m pretty good at it. They’d start at 250 RMB (that’s Chinese money) and we’d end up at around 25 RMB. We finished the day with a few more interviews, including another interview with Chinese TV, another interview with the second-biggest website in China, and an interview with another magazine, Titan (the equivalent of Sports Illustrated here in China). After the market, we had one last Chinese feast, and I went to bed early so I could be rested for the 17-hour flight home. I’ll never forget this trip, and I can’t wait to come back next year!
