The “Four Musketeers” – recovery and resilience
The remaining four male lions are being monitored closely andthe bullet wound to “Ben” does not appear to be serious. He is recovering andhe has spent a lot of time licking and keeping the wound clean, and there is nosign of infection. Early in July he was darted and immobilised to bere-collared and to check his wounds. It seems that three bullets hit him duringthe conflict, but the wounds have healed remarkably well. To strengthen therelationship between researchers and the Tomakas community, Japie, the headmanof the village was invited to be a part of and to assist with this operation.
The wound on the right cheek of “Adolf” is also healingwell.
The four brothers are showing remarkable resilience after losinga pride member. They have been observed with two lionesses of the Okongwepride, which may mean that they are mating again. It seems that the brothersmay have been searching for “Harry” as they have regularly returned to the areawhere the tragic incident occurred, and heard calling during the night.
