Soccer mum Nicole Kidman speaks up for Australia to host the World Cup
Nicole Kidman has become the face of a bid for Australia to host the World Cup that is culminating in a mega-media event in Cape Town this week.
Kidman, like David Beckham for England, touts Australia for the Cup as a "safe pair of hands"
for ''The No Worries World Cup'' in a short film made by the Football Federation Australia that was screened for the South African High Commissioner in Sydney.
Australia is a rank outsider for the 2018 Cup but is regarded as a chance for 2022. Football heavyweights from the nation have flocked to South Africa this week for a giant Media Expo and other events that include a hospital visit on the invitation of Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Kidman is a self-described "soccer mum" whose children play at her home in Nashville. The bidding for the Cup will become official on December 11 when countries present a binding ''Bid Agreement'' to FIFA.
Of the glitzy South African bid fest, FFA's chief executive Ben Buckley said: "We believe Australia's credentials and our emissaries representing the young people of Australia will help set us apart and position us strongly. It's a high quality, competitive field that we're in, but we are very encouraged by the feedback to date.''

Actress Nicole Kidman will be unveiled as the face of Australia’s World Cup bid for the 2018 or 2022 tournaments.
The star of Australia, Cold Mountain, Moulin Rouge, The Hours, The Others and many other top films will appear in a promotional video to be aired on Friday.
The Hollywood star will be the Australian equivalent of David Beckham who is the face of the English bid and will make personal appearances during the lead-up to FIFA’s decision for the hosting rights at the end of 2010.
FFA chairman Ben Buckley was confident the FFA was in with a very good chance to host one of the upcoming tournaments.
''We offer a 'no worries' World Cup, which is also fun, relaxed, safe and secure, a great destination and provides a warm welcome,'' Buckley said.
''With one year to go, it's time to step up our efforts from now and throughout 2010 until D-day.
''FIFA has set a level playing field by giving each of us guidelines to adhere to, but we believe Australia's credentials and our emissaries representing the young people of Australia will help set us apart and position us strongly.
“It's a high quality, competitive field that we're in, but we are very encouraged by the feedback on our work to date.
''Our work and our efforts over the next 12 months will increase in 2010 and be even more targeted to make sure we bring the FIFA World Cup home to Australia in 2018 or 2022.''
