Simon Cowell's withering one-liners on the X Factor have made him a household name.
And no wonder - he has spent the last 45 years practising his put-downs, his mother has revealed.
Describing her son as a 'determined and often difficult child,' Julie Cowell recalled an occasion when she bought a hat when Simon was five years old.
I asked him if I looked nice in it,' she said. 'He replied: "You look like a poodle".'
But despite his harsh words, 82-year-old Julie describes her son as simply 'honest'.
'It would only upset me if he really was a nasty person,' she said. 'Simon isn't nasty - he's just honest.

Speaking about his rise to success, Mrs Cowell said she feels very sad that his father didn't live to see it.

Mrs Cowell also said that her son inherited his strong work ethic from Eric.
'He's certainly a workaholic,' she said. 'He gets that from his father.'
But although she is justifiably proud of her son's success, Mrs Cowell is determined not to let it go to his head.
'I was watching for his feet to come off the ground,' she said. 'And if they did, I would have made sure they came down quickly.'

In the flesh, however, he is more compact that you might imagine; a vacuum-packed sort of guy - self-contained, clean-cut and oddly suburban, despite his international jet-set life and dizzying wealth
He wears, for example, exactly the same kind of muted clothes, year in, year out.
He has no idea what brand his jeans are, his V-necked sweater is 'at least' five years old and the only touches of discreet flash are a pair of softly expensive Berluti boots and a big knot of a watch.
'I am a creature of habit,' he says. 'I hate change, or drawing attention to myself. I get embarrassed because I am in the public eye.
'The idea of me walking out with some weird new haircut or something would be very embarrassing.'
What does that say about you? 'That I am probably quite boring.' His voice, so familiar from a hundred television shows, is clear and pleasant in tone.
Indeed, he has such perfect manners and is so much on his best behaviour tonight that it is hard to imagine here is the same monster whose crushing put-downs end the dreams of deluded wannabes on both sides of the Atlantic

Yet despite this Piers-shaped glitch in his life, Cowell is very at ease with himself and seems to live in his own bubble, always on the move.
The transit lounge life, shuttling back and forth across the Atlantic, suits him perfectly.
But what does he do, flitting between his homes in London, Barbados and Los Angeles - all of which, he says, are decorated in the 'fairly neutral' style he favours?
Who does he hang out with? What does he buy with all that loot? Exactly what ices the Cowell cake?
To be honest, all he seems to care about are cigarettes and work.
When asked to name his close friends, Cowell cites only his trio of ex-girlfriends, Jackie St Clair, Sinitta and Terri Seymour.

He likes cars, revealing that his greatest ever extravagance was buying himself a Bugatti. He hates wine and posh food, preferring a beer and a snack.
'I got good advice once. Someone said to me: "Live in your money rather than look at it," ' he says

When he dies, he says he is going to leave his entire fortune to an animal charity, which suggests he has ruled out the possibility of ever marrying and having children.
'Well, that might all change,' he says, 'but it is unlikely. I just don't think marriage would suit me or, particularly, the person I would marry.
'I am quite happy single. I am friends with all my exes and I enjoy their company, but I keep crazy hours.
So until I sort out what I am going to do in the next couple of years, or beyond, it is very difficult to think about something like that.'
Of course, there have long been rumours, which just won't go away, that Cowell is gay.
'In this business, if you were gay it wouldn't be a problem, would it? It is not exactly unusual to be gay in the music business or the TV business. It is 2009, after all. So if you are, you are; if you are not, you are not.'
And you are not? 'I am not gay,' he says, stubbing out his last cigarette

Cowell also takes this opportunity to point out that it is not true that he dyes his hair, which is dark and bristly, like a brush.
Indeed, he looks as if he should have a matching dustpan somewhere about his person. If he was in a closet he would, obviously, be taken out regularly and used to sweep the stairs.
Yet perhaps the truth is that Cowell is, emotionally, one of life's voyeurs. His own personal X Factor may be a simple one; that he is the kind of man who loves himself and his own company more than anything else

The driving force behind The X Factor, Simon is estimated to be worth more than £120million and was last week named as the highest paid man on television in the US, where he produces and presents American Idol.
‘His wealth and fame are so beyond any sort of normality,’ she says, in her first-ever interview.

‘He is busy in a way that even very wealthy people with high-flying careers are not. Simon is lovely, very family-orientated and I know he likes nothing better than to go home to his mum for a roast dinner. It is hard not to remember him as the cheeky, boisterous and mischievous little boy he once was.
‘But these days it seems difficult for even family like myself to get to speak to him. He is surrounded by layers of people and so incredibly busy that even if I rang him to suggest meeting for a chat his schedule would make it virtually impossible.’

The success has come at quite a price. His female admirers are legion, but there is no long-term relationship and there are no children.
‘It must be wonderful to have Simon’s millions but I would not want the sort of life that comes with it,’ she says
‘It may look amazing, but I would find it lonely and exhausting to continually jet off like him.’
June, after all, has her daughters, Luisa and Maria del Mar. Maria, a 27-year-old lawyer still lives at home, and June talks to economist Luisa, 31, every day.
‘Money couldn’t buy the joy my daughters have brought into my life. It really is priceless. They have been a huge support. Simon is so fantastic with children and they always respond to him so well that I find it baffling at 50 that he has none of his own,’ she says.
‘His brother Nicholas has two children, aged three and five, and Simon is brilliant with them. His mum Julie often jokes about it. “Simon, you’d make a wonderful dad,” she says, but he just replies, “I make a better uncle.”
