Moral reasoning: reasoning “by which human behaviors, institutions, or policies are judged to be in accordance with or in violation of moral standards” and essentially involving two elements: (1) a normative, or evaluative, element, some assumed moral principle or standard; (2) a factual, or descriptive, element that judges “that a particular person, policy, institution, or behavior has the kinds of features these moral standards require, prohibit, value, or condemn.” (§1.2).
