When Kilauea volcano's Puu Oo vent was active I visited it often. Onthis particular cold January morning the winds were light, whichallowed the superheated gases and steam to rise straight up into thesky from the glowing and spattering vents within Puu Oo. The cold airpushed the hot plumes back down in a swirling motion at sunrise. Thisallowed for the beautiful colors. Shot with a Nikon Dslr and the Nikon10.5 lens from the north rim of Puu Oo vent. 30-second exposure.

Perched above the lighted city of Catania, Italy,Mount Etna hurls a fountain of fire skyward as rivers of lava spilldown its flanks. In spite of its dazzling displays, Mount Etna is arelatively safe volcano with rare, compact eruptions and slow-flowinglava that gives people a chance to escape.Photograph by Carsten Peter
