the Cup brothers遵循"Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling"的范式, Cuphead是非常典型的动画主角(图一, 柠檬黄highlight), "seems to be a daredevil, he is shown to be the more confident, fun-loving and slightly cheeky type"(图一, 第一处蓝色highlight), "usually acting melodramatically and prone to doing irresponsible and impulsive things"(图二, 第一处highlight), "信心"满满, 爱玩爱闹, 虽说没坏心但经常热血上头, 不是闯祸就是捅娄子though adorable af(Joseph Joestar was 1 epitome); Mugman则截然相反, "will follow all the rules about how one is supposed to act and behave, being an exemplary version of a Proper Lady or The Dutiful Son & might be quieter or plaine"(图二, 第二处highlight), 安静内敛, 循规蹈矩, 是模范小孩according 2 tropes; 而且游戏的intro部分真的很archetypal, 他知道情形不对, 但老哥被巨额彩头蒙了心, 根本拦不住(图三, *handz over face* x10)

King Dice和the Cup brothers都是拟人化的卡通形象, 但作为The Heavy, 处处和他们形成鲜明对比:
→前者傲慢自大, 衣履光鲜, 穿着体面的晚礼服, 和朋友出入于各类 fancy places;
→后者(看上去)天真纯洁, 打扮也更日常、更亲切, 但被派出去干脏活, 更容易引起好感.

→因为两只杯子还是孩子. 制作公司用的是"kidults"(图一), 而作者称他们为adolescents(图二), 即"青少年", 虽然语焉不详, 但指出他们介乎童年和成年之间;
→他们都穿短裤(图三), the trait of being"青少年" was intensified: 短裤, tank-top和knee-highs是school boy的刻板印象三件套, 见图四和图五; 就像尿床放火和残害动物/戕害手足是serial killers' starter pack一样.

the Cup brothers & Elder Kettle the moonshiners:
→30年代《禁酒令》一经颁布, 大家遮遮掩掩, 纷纷把喝酒的家伙换成了茶具(图一);
→他们的小屋远离城区, 藏在树林深处, 外面就是一条大河, 和moonshiners的工作环境差不多(图二);
→《禁酒令》施行那十几年, 巴哈马酿了朗姆, 由船只送往佛州, 再销至全美; 而Inkwell Isle的面积和格局都和巴哈马群岛如出一辙, 小屋外面的港口还有驳船(图三);
→两只杯子里盛的不是牛奶. 传统动画要逐帧画在透明正片上, 所以无色的酒水和牛奶画法一样, 都要涂白. 而且Mugman每次开打前都要大吸一口杯中物(literally)给自己壮胆, 之后又折跟头又放大招, 牛奶可没这么大的劲儿(图四)
