At the time of the surrender, Chiang Kai Shek was the leader of China. He had every right to take revenge on Japan, ask for reparations, try and execute the thousands of Japanese soldiers who committed well-documented atrocities, large and small. Are you aware of the extent of the Japanese atrocities in WWII? It goes well beyond Nanjing; the Japanese committed atrocities wherever they went.

Instead, CKS basically just put them on boats and sent them home. Taiwan had been under Japanese control for fifty years. During the interim between surrender and returning Taiwan to Chinese power, the Japanese did everything they could to destroy the economy of Taiwan. They printed fake money, sent practically everything of value back to Japan, and ruined what they couldn’t. (The infamous 228 incident is a direct consequence of these efforts.) When Taiwan was back under Chinese control, the resident Japanese, civilians and military, were put on boats and sent home. I cannot recall hearing of any reprisals.
相反，蒋介石却只是用船只把他们给送回日本了。台湾此前被日本控制了五十年。在投降和把台湾归还中国的过渡时期，日本人尽其所能地破坏了台湾的经济。他们印假钞，把几乎所有有价值的东西都送回了日本，把他们毁不到的东西都毁了。(臭名昭著的228事件就是这些努力的直接结果。)当台湾回到中国的控制之下时，居住在台湾的日本人，包括平民和军人，都被送上了船，并被遣送回国。我不记得当时发生过任何报复性行为。
Taiwan was treated far better than other places the Japanese conquered, but when I came in 1971, I was shocked by the number of places locals would point out as being execution grounds in Japanese times. A friend grew up in a house nobody else wanted, because the previous owner had been a Japanese police officer; he would take suspects home and after interrogating them, shoot them in the backyard, innocent or guilty.
台湾的待遇比日本占领的其他地方要好得多，但当我1971年来到这里时，我震惊地发现，在日据时期，当地人会指出许多地方是行刑的地方。我的一个朋友在一所没人要的房子里长大，因为这所房子的前任主人是一名日本警官；他会把嫌疑犯带回家，在审问完他们之后，在后院射杀他们，不管他们是无辜的还是有罪的。
