"Michael Jackson was the best. Not just as a vocalist but as a musician. He took it to the sky. He could play piano a little but he wasn't that kind of a musician. Michael's instrument was his voice and ideas. Quincy's instrument, and mine I guess, was the studio. It was such a great thing working with Michael; we just kept pushing the musical boundaries. Was I lucky or what?"

"Once he went on his knees and started playing piano in the barn. He played a few notes then began singing. It was a love song and sounded really good and he had actually written it right there in front of me. It was amazing to watch, it took him about 6 minutes. When he got up I said did you just write that? He said ´yeah, but I have forgotten it already´. Then he started looking for something else to do. No matter what his problems are, the man is a complete genius."

Q: Did Michael Jackson write the lyrics to most of his music? How involved was he in the production of his records? Did he ever play any musical instruments? In general, how deep was his musical acumen?
He wrote more as time went on. I suspect that he was quite involved in production of his music after Off The Wall. I think he knew how to play the guitar but didn't do it much. With all he learned at Motown and beyond, I would say he had strong musical knowledge.

Jackson first wrote and recorded "Don't Be Messin'" during the Thriller sessions with engineer Brent Averill. Around this time he was working on a variety of musical ideas, including demos of "P.Y.T." and "Billie Jean." "Don't Be Messin'" features Jackson himself playing piano ("He could do more than he ever really let people know," Forger says.) He also produced, arranged, and guided many of the instrumental parts, including the cinematic strings, Jonathan Maxey's piano part in the bridge, and David Williams funky guitar licks.
Ultimately, since "Don't Be Messin'" wasn't fully developed and so much other strong material was coming in for Thriller, Jackson decided to put the song on the back burner, having in mind to revisit it for his next album. "That was kind of how Michael developed ideas and songs," explains Forger. "He let the song unfold in its own time. Sometimes a song wasn't ready or didn't quite fit the character of an album or a project and it would stay in the vaults. And then at a certain point of time, he would pull it out again."

He would beatbox a lot… always thinking of new ideas. It was so common that we wouldn’t really ask if it was a new song, we just waited for him to ask for a fresh piece of tape.
As to mimicing an instrument, he could beat-box better than anyone I have ever heard, and he could "sing" guitar parts, bass parts, keyboard sounds, etc., for the musicians to get ideas and his direction for a song.

People ask me how I make music. I tell them I just step into it. It’s like stepping into a river and joining the flow. Every moment in the river has its song. So I stay in the moment and listen.
What I hear is never the same. A walk through the woods brings a light, crackling song: Leaves rustle in the wind, birds chatter and squirrels scold, twigs crunch underfoot and the beat of my heart holds it all together. When you join the flow, the music is inside and outside, and both are the same. As long as I can listen to the moment, I’ll always have music.

The songwriting process is something very difficult to explain, because it's very spiritual. It's, uh...You really have it in the hands of God, and it's as if its been written already - that's the real truth. As if its been written in its entirety before were born and you're just really the source through which the song come. Really. Because there is...they just fall right into your lap in it's entirety. You don't have to do much thinking about it. And I feel guilty having to put my name, sometimes, on the songs that I - I do write them - I compose them, I write them, I do the scoring, I do the lyrics, I do the melodies but still, it's a...it's a work of God."

Michael Jackson the Beatboxer?
Unknown to most people, Michael Jackson was also an extraordinary beatboxer. He would form the beats in his head, produce sounds of the entire band with his mouth, and then tape record the idea down. Not only was he a talented singer and dancer, he was also a top notch vocal percussionist that was hard to beat in in terms of musicality. He also performed it live at the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1993.
How He Wrote Songs?
Interestingly, Michael Jackson wrote songs by thinking carefully of the song in his head before producing the harmony, melody, bass line, and drums, using his mouth to record a sample.
