The week of cool weather turned warm Friday afternoon, just in time for Wausau Area Events' Summer Kick-off.
About 4,000 people brought their lawn chairs, strollers and blankets to Wausau's downtown City Square to enjoy a night of music, food and the movie "Shrek," shown on the big screen.
The Wausau West Jazz Band set the mood with a selection of songs, followed by national performer Evan Taubenfeld, who played his hit song, "Boy Meets Girl," and three others.
"He makes great music," said Alicia Adams, 11, of Wausau. "Most big singers don't like coming to small towns like Wausau."
After the performance, Taubenfeld met with fans who won tickets to the meet and greet from 95.5 WIFC-FM. Aislinn Bauer, 13, and Lindsey Keith, 13, both of Wisconsin Rapids, were lucky ticket winners and enjoyed the free show.
"I think it's fun," Aislinn said.
Taubenfeld, of Baltimore, said he enjoyed his time in Wausau before hitting the road again for a show in Fond du Lac.
"I was kind of blown away," he said. "There was a ton of people ... I think it's slightly ironic, because my song is meant to be the ultimate summer love song, like a 2009 version of 'Jack and Diane.'"Leah Alters, executive director of Wausau Area Events, said she had never seen so many young girls scream as she did during Taubenfeld's performance. Friday's turnout was one of the best the event has had, she said.
"It's a big summer event," said Roxie Brecke of Weston. "It's nice to get outside and do something."
Her husband plays in the local band The Brewins, which played for two hours before the movie started.
Some at the kick-off could literally taste the onset of summer. Tanya Schulz, 30, of Wausau enjoyed a basket of cheese curds with her sister Annastacia Cortright, 24, of Wausau.
"As soon as I got out of the car, I could smell them," Schulz said. "After a week of rain, it's nice to get out here."
