Andy Couturier’s book, The Abundance of Less, draws on profiles of people rejecting city life in favour of a rural existence. Originally written for The Japan Times from 1999-2000, they explore the lives of individuals who have chosen to live with “less” in spite of a culture that urges “more”. Japan urbanised decades ago, but China is rapidly catching up, and a consumerist culture is taking root. This makes Couturier’s message of purposeful minimalism particularly relevant today.1999年到2000年间，安迪·库蒂里耶为《日本时报》撰写了一系列拒绝城市生活、寄情乡野环境的人物小传，《简朴的广度》（The Abundance of Less）一书正是这些文章的结集。这本书探究了那些“以简为乐”的人的生活，而他们这种态度与现在“多多益善”的文化氛围可谓南辕北辙。日本在数十年前已经实现了城市化，而中国正在迅速迎头赶上，消费主义文化在这期间逐渐生根发芽。这使得库蒂里耶极力推崇的有目的的极简主义也变得尤为有意义。
