An Eternity with Mikkel
By : PETRINA JO FERNANDEZ
2009/02/01
Eternity is Lenz’s first attempt at producing an album.
Michael Learns to Rock guitarist Mikkel Lentz tells PETRINA JO FERNANDEZ about the band’s return to its original sound of the ’90s in its latest album Eternity.
IT’S smooth, soulful and rocking the airwaves. It’s been 20 years since international pop band Michael Learns to Rock (MLTR) was formed, and like fine wine, it has aged well.
Known for chart-toppers Sleeping Child, 25 Minutes and Paint My Love, it is little wonder that vocalist Jascha Richter, guitarist Mikkel Lentz and drummer Kare Wanscher have defined Scandinavia’s pop music.
In an exclusive phone interview, Lentz spoke candidly of MLTR’s latest single, Sweetest Surprise, and new album Eternity.
His rich baritone hummed and he chuckled occasionally as he dished tidbits of the band’s rise to fame.
Twenty-five minutes flew by as the Danish heartthrob spoke of his passions — his music, his band and his family.
QUESTION: Can you give us a taste of Eternity?
ANSWER: I especially feel attached to Eternity, the first album I’ve produced!
It’s a return to our original sound, something our fans from the ’90s will enjoy, inspired by the early years of our music, namely albums such as Played on Pepper and Nothing to Lose.
Eternity is based on our fans’ reactions. We have a slightly edgier sound now.
Q: What’s your favourite from Eternity?
A: I have two — It’s Gonna Make Sense, which reminds me of our song Someday, and Shadow Side of Me for its beautiful melody. There are also two songs — Look Around and You Want More — worth listening to. They’re particularly special.
