Zhang Liangying, one of China's top pop stars, gave her first public performance in Japan on Sunday, signaling the start of her campaign to break into the Japanese music scene.
Performing in Tokyo's trendy Shibuya shopping and nightlife district, Zhang rendered a mixture of Chinese language hits, cover versions of English-language songs, and her first Japanese language offering which translates as "Nevertheless I Want To Love You." The audience of several hundred, a mixture of curious Japanese and long-time Chinese fans, was much smaller than the singer is used to in her homeland, but it was a good start. Zhang came to prominence after showing off her soprano voice and fluent English in 2005. Since then she's become one of China's biggest pop stars, breaking just about every record for a Chinese artist by playing to packed stadiums across the country.
