In the microcosm of Hong Kong’s entertainment world, there are not many places left to go once you’ve been to the top. And that’s familiar territory for Hong Kong Cantopop queen and screen siren Anita Mui Yim-fong, who has been there, done that and still has marquee pulling power with the fans after nearly two decades in the entertainment industry. Not content, however, with merely having been there and done that, Mui has a restless creativity that won’t let her stay stuck in the mainstream. “What I want to do most now is to make a musical because the entertainment industry – especially live concerts – is getting to be too much of the same thing, too common,” the 37-year-old pop diva says. “The culture of the musical has not really been passed on to Hong Kong people. I hope I can get audiences to appreciate and welcome this art form until it too becomes more accepted, “ Mui says, her expression hidden behind the reflective barrier of her sunglasses. She has some ideas for a musical, which she prefers to keep to herself for the moment. But Mui has found some investors and is hunting for scriptwriters. “I’m serious about this. I really hope it will happen, but it’s just in the very initial stages right now, “ she says. “I’ve done film and music for so long that I want to combine both loves in a musical, “ Hong Kong’s top female entertainer says, looking for the next challenge. “I’m just waiting for the right time.”
