Mikhail Saakashvili, the former Georgian president and ex-governor of Ukraine’s Odessa who now leads the Ukrainian opposition Movement of New Forces, was detained in Kiev on Tuesday by Ukraine’s prosecutors, MP Viktor Chumak said.
"The special ops units took Mikhail Saakashvili from the roof of his house," Chumak told the Public TV channel. A TASS correspondent reported that Saakashvili has not yet left the entrance of his house as the supporters have been blocking the street.
Mikhail Saakachvili has been charged with attempting to oust Ukraine’s authorities, his lawyer said. "Saakashvili is accused of an attempt to overthrow the constitutional system," Pavel Bogomazov said.
Saakashvili has been taken from his house in handcuffs. Ukraine’s Special Security Service conducted a search of his house earlier on Tuesday.
However, his supporters are trying to prevent the law enforcers from taking Saakashvili to a pre-trial detention center. Clashes have been reported near a car where the politician is now.
