To spark a new interest in tennis among people in China, the organizing committee of the China Open, the top international tennis contest held every autumn in Beijing, launched a series of activities to promote the sport this spring.

To help people that have never played tennis, special training camps will be established from this month to teach them basic tennis skills, etiquette and knowledge. The training camps will be located in more than 20 universities in Beijing and dozens of communities around Beijing. Anybody who is interested, Chinese and foreigners, can call the organizing committee to apply for free tennis coaching.

The winners will also get the chance to win a prize of expensive tennis rackets and tennis bags.
As China will hold the 2008 World Special Olympic Games for the first time, the tennis promotion also targets the handicapped to help them enjoy the sport. There will be free training programs for the disabled. The committee will also provide free training for gym teachers in special schools and distribute free tennis equipment to handicapped students.

To increase public awareness about the sport, the organizing committee has established special tennis teams made up of Chinese celebrities.

Director Xia Gang was appointed as the captain, and the team members include TV stars Liu Yunlong, Zang Jinsheng, Hu Yue and others.

Every month the celebrity team will take part in a free friendship competition with 网球业余爱好者 teams inLiu Yunlong, image ambassador for the team, said that all the members, even those who have been playing the sport for fewer than two years, had made rapid progress since joining the team.
