Brook Lopez: Still wants to stay, still prepared for rumors
by Net Income Feb 8, 2017, 8:22am EST
In his ninth year as a Net —the last surviving New JerseyNet, among other distinctions, Brook Lopez is used to trade rumors this time ofthe year. It’s two weeks and one day before the trade deadline.
“I’ve talked to [my agent]. But it’s something I’m used toby now. It wouldn’t be comfortable without it,’’ said Lopez. “I haven’t heardanything. I’m all right. If it were pressing or something was happening, I’d beaware.”
It has been an article of faith that Sean Marks will try totrade the 28-year-old for first round picks to replenish the cupboard wipedclean by the previous regime. According to various reports, the asking pricefor Lopez is two first rounders, one in this year’s lottery and another futurefirst rounder, preferably in 2018, when the Nets don’t have a pick in the firstor second round as of now.
“Yeah, I realize there’s a possibility of both things. I’vesaid what I’d prefer. They’re going to make their decision, but I would hopethat I’d be informed, and I have the confidence they would inform me if theywere thinking [of doing] something or something was going down.”
It hasn’t always been that way. Lopez’s name was key toNets attempts to get Carmelo Anthony from Denver; Dwight Howard from Orlandoand Reggie Jackson from Oklahoma City. The latter two came within hours ofgetting done —in one case, he was told to get off the team bus. But nothinghappened.
Lopez, as always, wants to stay, wants to see the rebuildthrough.
“I’ve consistently said I want to see nothing but goodthings here and I’d love to be a part of that. It’s the one team I’ve playedfor, the one team I’ve known. I want to see great things happen here and I’dlove to be a part of that foundation and that growth. … That said, obviously Ionly can control what I can control: There are other variables out there.”
Lopez, of course, isn’t the only player whose name has beenrun through the rumor mill. Bojan Bogdanovic, a restricted free agent in July,is also a candidate. It doesn’t bother him, he told writers.
“I don’t read those rumors,” said Bogdanovic, who hasn’tdiscussed trade talk with Marks. “What happens is going to happen. There isnothing that I can do with that . . . I’m not thinking about it honestly, noteven one percent.”
How real are the rumors? There is NO indication the Netsare “actively” shopping the two, to use the term of art, but that doesn’t meanthey won’t. Trade talks have a tendency to heighten during the All-Star break.
So, we wait.
