It may seem ridiculous to predict a year ahead with one word. Not even if that word is Trump.
But music in 2017 spreads itself out before Australia and it is hard to see past the one word, the one-named giant when it comes to sales, attention and widespread love: Adele.
With ticket sales past the 600,000 mark and estimates already that it will be the most financially lucrative series of concerts ever in Australia – on top of album sales heading towards the million mark for just three records so far – nothing will compare with the Londoner's March shows.
Actually "shows" undersells things, given the concerts are in stadiums such as ANZ in Sydney; we're talking "events". Prepare for breathless reports of sightings in high-end fashion stores and sneaky shots of her having a quick smoke behind the sheds, lists of how much equipment is being carried around on big trucks and at least one image of the tear-stained face of some young fan whose abject failures of parents were unable to secure a ticket.
Could that be why Neil Young and Barry Gibb pulled out of the Byron Bay Blues & Roots Festival? Who needs that kind of competition when you have been making music for 50 years?
More seriously, Blues Fest, which has been plagued with withdrawals and complaints about long delays in announcing those withdrawals to people who bought their tickets months ahead, will still cast a decent shadow.
Though it is not a travelling festival in the manner of Falls or Laneways, most of its biggest names will be playing capital city shows – including Patti Smith, who is making her last tour to Australia. Her Melbourne show is being marketed as the final time she will ever play here. It may even be true.
The picks of the side-shows are likely to be two artists at opposite ends of the age spectrum, although their influences aren't that far apart: slide guitar and blues legend Bonnie Raitt and the soul-groove Brit, Michael Kiwanuka.

Doubleheaders such as Simple Minds and the B-52s (at the Hordern Pavilion) and Cyndi Lauper and Blondie (ICC Sydney Theatre) will likely be smooth operations if for no other reason than fans of a certain age aren't really keen on standing around until the witching hour any more.
At the same time that Adele is sucking in all the oxygen for fans of middle-of-the-road pop, their children/younger siblings/irony-rich friends will be taking up the offer from Canadian Justin Bieber to – borrowing from his 2009 and 2015 hits - Love Me and Love Yourself.
It certainly works for him. He has been in the top 10 singles and albums charts for the past two years and is now moving from tabloid fodder punchline to someone putting on shows at the same venue as Adele, ANZ Stadium.
Also coming this year are the reformed Pixies, the resistance fighting Dixie Chicks, the refreshed Green Day, the not yet retiring Don Henley and James Taylor and on Sunday night the reconstituted members of various David Bowie bands from across the decades in a show that is more than a tribute (but less than an actual Bowie concert).
Despite appearances, not everyone will be touring Australia in 2017 – although there will be speculation that Beyonce will bring her show here. Some people will only be releasing albums, and there are some that already have excited interest, including recent visitors Ryan Adams, who will release Prisoners in mid-February, and the Shins, who will put out Heartworms in March.
Canada's, ahem, alternative to Justin Bieber, Arcade Fire, are expected to follow up their recent politically charged single with Mavis Staples (I Give You Power) with a fifth, as yet unnamed album. It will likely arrive before a much-delayed album by Beck but maybe after the new album from Brisbane's own, ahem, Beck – Bernard Fanning – who may have hinted at a direction with his co-headlining tour with country star Kasey Chambers.

Speaking of big players, U2 and Kanye may have new albums, but given their record with delays (U2) and general stuffing around with the whole idea of "releasing" anything (Kanye) it's likely that by the time those arrive Melbourne's King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard will have released at least half the four albums they've promised for 2017. Yes, that is four.
Whatever all those blokes do though may matter little when what could be the pop album of the year is released by New Zealand superstar Lorde. With an international number one last time she put something out, there are expectations of mega sales and cultural dominance. And she isn't even 21 yet.
