Here I am sitting on my chair alone, thinking about what I have just finished reading Water For Elephant with indignation filling my heart, which is about a touring circus brought happiness and inspiration to the American Village. The circus dreamed to take off on the stage. Even if the deformity warmed them up behind the stage, they began their displaced life. Jacob will graduate from the medical school. Due to his parent’s death, he lost his direction of life. He jumped on a circus train, leading him to a different life. Behind the joy of the circus, another imaginative life showed up. In the tour way, Jacob found that the circus is not simple. In fact, the money supreme boss and the bad temper manager would like to make their living in the circus. They must let themselves become useful. Jacob’s new friend Walter and Mr. Came, who drank the false wine and lived together. Jacob began to understand how people get along in life, which is more important than the fame and wealth.To my point of view, the story began in 1930 during the economic recession period. We could follow Jacob catching with the train back to see the circus, which we did not know before. In the story, we can know that Jacob’s love for the circus was obviously written on the book.As a matter of fact, we have the impression that the circus is glamorous that is full of laugher and joy. But we do not see the story behind the performers and their tears. The inequality system of the circus seems like a small version of the large society. “The Red Light System”, just like the community who are marginalized and abandon. And it is like a vicious cycle, increasing alienation among the people.“I do not talk much about those days. Never did. I don't know why-I worked on circuses for nearly seven years, and if that isn't fodder for conversation, I don't know what is.”(p8) When we live in a large society, love between the people is a very important issue. Although the circus is cold-hearted, there is still love in it. Such as Jacob’s love for animals, the love for his friend, the love for Malena and the love for the elephant Rosie, which let him, protect the things he loves and keep the secret for 70 years. Because of the love, given the people encouragement.In the story, we can see the sake of the greedy man. People are often fooled by interests and they will not satisfy with it. The more interests the people acquire, the stronger desires they will have. The greedy man will become sacred when they become cruel. And Uncle Alan is the most vivid example, who devotes himself to beyond the Lilia Circus to become the largest and the most well-known circus. But when he suffered from the close of the circus, he kills himself. Consequently, the master yearning for power, but in the end it will result in the most injury.All in all, no one is willing to let you to share his efforts.
