诗的作者是一位普普通通的妻子，生活在美国，和大多数人一样，拥有平凡的家庭，过着平凡的日子。但一切因为战乱停止了。她的丈夫应征去了越南战场，在那里不幸阵亡，再没有回来。现实的残酷令她备受折磨。她时常想起丈夫与她在一起的时光，常常沉浸在回忆里无法自拔，以泪洗面。本以为时间可褪掉所有悲伤的色彩，年复一年，她仍然无法控制的想念丈夫，最后守寡终身，年老病逝而终。有一天，她的女儿在整理遗物时发现了母亲当年写给父亲的这一首未曾发出去的情诗，题目是《但是你没有》。

原文如下：
Remember the day I borrowed your brand-new car and dented it？
记得那天我向你借用了你全新的轿车，我把它弄坏了，
I thought you'd kill me,
我以为你一定非常生气，
But you didn't.
但是你没有。
And remember the time I dragged you to the beach,
记得那天我非要拉你去海边，
And you said it would rain,
你劝告过我一会儿就会下雨，
And it did. I thought you'd say,
后来如你所说真的下雨了，我以为你会对我说，
"I told you so."

记得那时候我总是和别的男孩子题调情故意让你吃醋嫉妒,

记得那时候我因为难受在你的新车上吐的到处都是

And remember the time I forgot to tell you the dance was formal and you showed up in jeans?
记得有一次我忘记告诉你即将参加的舞会一定要身着正装，你穿着牛仔就来了
I thought you'd drop me,
我以为你一定会丢下我走掉
But you didn't.

Yes, there were lots of things you didn't do. But you put up with me,
是啊，有许多事我以为你会做，可是你没有。因为你容忍我，
And loved me,
爱护我
And protected me.
保护我
There were lots of things I wanted to make up to you
然而有太多事我想为你去做
When you returned from Vietnam.
等你从越南回来
But you didn't.
但是你却没有。

一生到底有多长？似乎有很长，长的没有人去想这个问题。时间在平淡的日子里匆匆流逝。年轻的你热情，富有闯劲儿，希望可以在有限的时间为自己创出一片天地。这没错儿。但也请记得，珍惜与爱你的人在一起的时光，因为爱他／她，一辈子真的太短。
