IfGarbine Muguruzaentered the most important tennis discussions as a finalist at Wimbledon 2015, she became a major talking point when she defeated Serena Williams to claim her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.

With a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 progression over the lower-ranked yet clearly dangerous opponent, Muguruza not only answered any questions about how her major-winning clay court form might transform to grass, but also showed how she can withstand the pressure of being a Grand Slam champion.

For there was much of it against the crafty Giorgi, who entered the match with a 2-1 head-to-head lead that the world No.67 Italian was clearly determined to build upon. “I think I had a very tough match today,” conceded Muguruza, who took two hours and 32 minutes to secure her victory.

Mallorca was the only lead-in event Muguruza contested and she lost in her opening round toKirsten Flipkens.

There were signs that her 2016 Wimbledon campaign could follow a similar pattern as Giorgi clawed her way back from a first set deficit – in which she held serve only once – to bravely take command in the second.

Unafraid to implement some risky strategy, Giorgi’s fighting spirit was most evident in the 15 break points she saved in the suspenseful encounter. Five of those were in an epic third game of the final set, which lasted more than 10 minutes before the Italian surrendered her serve with a forehand error.

It was one of the 42 errors that would prove costly to Giorgi and just the turning point Muguruza required. Growing in both confidence and authority, she secured the match in the game of final set with a trademark booming serve that was virtually undeliverable.
