Now with mic in hand, mature Thorpedo looking forward to new beginning

MUMBAI: SWIMMING, especially Olympic swimming, may have had its biggest superhero Michael Phelps in the last decade, but Ian Thorpe refuses to go away.
It was the Thorpedo who made swimming and body suits glamorous again with his sensational run of three gold medals at the 2000 Olympics before depression and injury forced him into early retirement in 2006. Having done a lot of growing up since, the Australian will now be seen taking over the microphone during the Rio Games and cheering Phelps from the sidelines.
“Michael is a great champion and I want to see him do well,” said Thorpe during an event in Mumbai on Thursday. The 33-year-old will be part of the Star Sports panel for the Rio Games that begins on August 5.
“I enjoy being able to talk about what he can do in swimming. And, he has a new baby as well now. I think this will be his last Olympics. I didn’t think in London that it would be his last. I thought there would be one more, and I’m glad there is. I hope he wins at least a couple of golds as long as they’re not against Australia.”
