Scores of sports fans waited in line for severalhours for a chance at autographs from former Sacramento Kings player Mike Bibbyduring the Dick’s Sporting Goods grand opening celebration Sunday morning.
The popular basketball personality arrived at noon andwas greeted by more than 100 eager fans during the national sporting goodretailer’s three-day grand opening celebrations.
Victor Vasquez and his son Matthew traveled fromReno, Nevada for their chance to meet the former star Kings player.
Though the pair arrived nearly five hours ahead ofthe star player they had come to see, the former Sacramentan said other fanshad gotten there even earlier. According to Vasquez, the journey and the waitwas worth it, especially because Bibby doesn’t do many signing events.
“Bibbyplayed in an era where the Kings were really, really good and fun andfriendly,” he said. Bibby hasn’t done much signing since he left the Kings.”
The storefront, located in the Willow CreekShopping Center, represents the first location in the Sacramento market andwill make for some stiff competition for other nearby sporting good chains,like Sports Authority.
Amy Vanderlin, a spokesperson for Dick’s SportingGoods, said the store represents a new market of opportunity for the nationalchain.
“This particular store in the Sacramentomarket and we’re just happy to be here. The community has been great, superwelcoming. We have an excellent staff and excellent customers,” she said.“Everyone has been awesome and is super excited that we are here and taking onFolsom, California.”
The three-day’s worth of festivities began Fridaythough the location was officially opened Tuesday following a ribbon cutting.Former wide receiver Dwight Clark signed autographs for fans Saturday.
