When Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely spoke with The Huffington Post recently, the screenwriting duo behind Captain America: Civil War and many other Marvel flicks had discussed their next collaboration with the studio and the directors, Anthony & Joe Russo.
The Russo brothers once teased that Avengers: Infinity War – Part One and Part Two will feature at least 67 characters, but Markus and McFeely have now set the record straight.
“Well, I mean that number is literally — that number comes from the fact that that is everyone who has already been introduced,” Christopher Markus explained. “If you line up all the characters who are available to use from the prior Marvel Studios movies, it racks up to about 60-something characters, let alone the new ones you could bring in.”
Stephen McFeely then explained further: “We had our office filled with cards of everybody who was alive and available, and the [Russo] brothers came in and went, ‘Whoa.’ So that does not mean that everyone is, you know, there is not going to be 67 lead parts.”
So, that explains that. However, the fact that the Russos declared at least 67 characters being involved in Infinity War could indicate they want to utilize them all. Regardless, the screenwriters went on to reveal which particular character they are most excited to use.
“[Thanos]. It’s easy,” replied McFeely. “Really giving him good scenes. You know, he’s never been the villain in any of the movies. He has never been the main character in that way, so giving lots of good screen time to Thanos is paramount and pretty fun.”
Given the Mad Titan has already been revealed as a forthcoming foe, the writers were asked if there is a difference in their approach to the character compared to other villains.“There’s an aspect of, you know, people know what’s coming, so our challenge is how best are we going to handle this somewhat known quantity,” Markus answered. “But also he’s barely been touched on. He’s at about 20 seconds of screen time.” McFeely added,“He hasn’t had an amazing scene. I think it’s an advantage ultimately, right? Because people are anticipating this guy coming in and really delivering the goods. So, I think they’re eager, and we just have to deliver it. We don’t have to convince them that he’s gonna be interesting. We just have to execute what has been teased.” What do you think?
Avengers: Infinity War will be directed by Joe & Anthony Russo, and is scheduled to start filming later this year with Part One opening May 4, 2018, and Part Two May 3, 2019.
