Tom DeLonge has a restless soul, which might be part of the explanation for why he left Blink-182 a year ago and hasn't looked back since.

“I reflect on it all the time. I love Blink. I started that band. I named the band. I found the members. I put that whole thing together," DeLonge told Esquire magazine. "I never meant for it to be the only thing in my life. I also never meant for it to ever not be in my life. But I am an artist, and I find pleasure in challenging myself to understand and learn, to create new types of art, and prove myself worthy of people's valued attention and admiration. It's what any artist desires. So when the challenge isn't there, then I find myself in a difficult position.”

DeLonge has been keeping very busy since the split, working on feature films, novels, documentaries and comic books for his latest multimedia project, Sekret Machines, which is a deep dive into UFOs and secret government files. “It's the first time we're going to be answering questions and communicating things about this topic to the world. This project is going to be something that I think could be pretty revolutionary,” he said about the research he's done on UFOs and aliens, some of which shows up in his new novel, “Chasing Shadows”.

Mostly, though, he likes how his various far-flung projects keep him really busy. And while he notes that “with Blink, it was never boring,” DeLonge explained that one of the stumbling blocks in their relationship was a disagreement on how the trio could continue challenging themselves. “There's a lot of downtime,” he said. “And in that downtime, I was always doing other things... A lot of people are satisfied with just having that one thing in their life their entire time -- and I envy them, by the way.”
