Ice-nine is a material appearing in Kurt Vonnegut's novel Cat's Cradle. Ice-nine is supposedly a catalyst of water instead of melting at 0 °C (32 °F), the result melts at 45.8 °C. When ice-nine comes into contact with liquid water below 45.8 °C, it acts as a seed crystal and causes the solidification of the entire body of water, which quickly crystallizes as more ice-nine.

所以关于Ice-9的性质及原理（！）只能从网友的讨论中得到。

关于Ice-9的信息处理机制，现在知道的很少。大概是通过B七连骨牌和H七连骨牌的完美配合进行的，因为SC太脆弱了，在煮汤过程中会被破坏。

Ice-9的动力学类似于循环型CA：

生命游戏和循环型CA之间有很精妙的相似处：都有无法破坏的图形，都难以通过煮汤发现，都有构造的方法（目前不清楚次宇宙示波器的工作原理，不过应该是通过构造实现的）。可以通过认识循环型CA的图形认识Ice-9。
