Eastern Ghouta is a bastion for the al-Qaeda-linked Jabhet al-Nusra, which is excluded from the freshly-enforced ceasefire The recently-established ceasefire in Syria has been bluntly broken yesterday when hardline militants fighting for the Al-Nusra Front and Faylaq al-Rahman attacked Syrian Army’s positions in Bala, Eastern Ghouta. A military source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Al-Masdar that fierce clashes erupted yesterday evening as Syrian troops foiled a wide-scale offensive by militants attempting to storm the Army barricades in Bala. The clashes lasted until Tuesday early morning
“The Army used surface-to-surface missiles to thwart the attack. We have not lost any position, on the contrary, we advanced and captured more points”, the source added. Anti-government activists reported that al-Qaeda franchise in Syria, Jabhet Al-Nusra, along with other ultra-Islamic armed groups are forming a new joint army in Eastern Ghouta to forestall a potential attack by the Syrian Army and allied forces. The Russia-US brokered ceasefire in Syria is excluding the self-styled Islamic State (IS), Jabhet Al-Nusra (al-Qaeda Syrian branch) and other extremist groups. The Islamist rebels’ futile assault is triggered by fears of being completely encircled in the villages of Deir al-Asafir and Zabdin after Syrian Armed Forces have secured Al-Maliha to the east and Marj al-Sultan airbase to the west.
