Take 5John 5 has a new album, a new group and an Ozzfest gig with Rob Zombie. Does this guy ever come up for air? … The Prince of 5-ness: John 5Photo by Robert Knight ometimes it’s said that good things happen in threes. John 5 would doubtless agree. Most musicians would be thrilled to have just one project going great guns, but shredder extraordinaire John 5 is definitely on a roll lately: He’s about to gig with longtime idol Rob Zombie at this summer’s Ozzfest, his second dazzling solo instrumental album arrives in September, and his new band—called Loser, if you can believe that—just inked a deal with Island Records. So there.“There’s so much going on now,” 5 said with a slight laugh. “A lot of irons in the fire, and all those irons seem to be working. I’m just lucky. I’ll do a bunch of things, and hopefully one of those things will work out. But now all three of them worked out.”Born John Lowery in Grosse Pointe, Mich., 5 is best known for his stint with Marilyn Manson. In contrast to that image though, 5 has worked with an unexpectedly diverse range of artists—from K.D. Lang to Rob Halford and from David Lee Roth to Salt ‘N Pepa. He began playing at age 7, inspired by watching The Monkees and Hee Haw with his dad. He soon discovered Kiss and Van Halen, and there’s since been no stopping him. He doesn’t drink, doesn’t use drugs, and is known in the industry as a hard worker and a genuinely nice guy. He’s certainly a genuinely busy guy.The Zombie gig is especially gratifying, because 5 isn’t just a huge rock musician, he’s a huge rock fan; a guy who reveres his idols with the breathless fervor of a teenager.“Dave Navarro came to me and said ‘Would you like to do this tsunami benefit thing?’” 5 said. “I don’t really like to get up and just jam—I usually like to have things a little more organized—so I said, ‘Well, who’s gonna be there? Who am I going to play with?’ They said ‘Rob Zombie will be there.’“I’m a really big Rob Zombie fan. So I went to rehearsal, and I knew the songs already—we did ‘Thunder Kiss ’65.’ I said ‘Hey, if you ever need somebody to play for your show, just let me know.’”And that was that. The phone rang in short order.“The audition was pretty much at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim in front of 17,000 people,” 5 said. “It went really well, and Rob said, ‘Cool—you’ll do just fine.’ It was really good.”Consequently, you’ll now find John 5 prowling the stage with Zombie this summer, headlining on the Ozzfest Hot Topic second stage. And if you happen to bump into him there, you might even ask him about that new solo instrumental album. The Unknown Country That would be Songs For Sanity, a 12-song scorcher due this September that features guest appearances by formidable pals Steve Vai and Albert Lee. Songs is 5’s second guitar tour de force, after last year’s Vertigo, an album that surprised everybody with its startling combination of jaw-dropper shred and, believe it or not, countrified chicken pickin’.

Told you. John 5 is effusive in his praise of the instrument, to say the least. And he’s not even finished yet …“And I love my custom Telecasters,” he said, breathlessly. “With Zombie, of course, I’ll be playing my model; my Telecaster [the Fender Custom Shop built the J5 Telecasters for him in 2003]. They’re the greatest guitars ever built, by far, hands down, and you can print that in bold letters! It’s great playing that heavy, mean Zombie music with a Telecaster! And then I can go play bluegrass music with it, so it’s an all-around great guitar.”But what about when his guitar collection is complete? What will provide the thrill of the hunt then? Not to worry.“I’m a crazy Fender fanatic,” 5 said emphatically. “Every night before I go to bed, I look on eBay for the old catalogs—you know, to go with a certain guitar from a certain year—the ’66 catalog or the ’67 catalog, and the old straps and the old polish cloths and the old picks to go inside the case, which is, you know—they call the case candy for the guitar. It’s really fun. And now I’m getting into the old ‘50s Fender amps.”He laughed again and said, “It’s like, ‘Oh no!’ …” Deb Rao of Glam-Metal.com recently conducted an interview with former MARILYN MANSON and current ROB ZOMBIE guitarist John 5 (a.k.a. John Lowery). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow: Glam-Metal.com: How did you get the gig with Rob? John 5: "I got a call from Dave Navarro to do the tsunami benefits in Los Angeles. We played at Arrowhead Pond. I don't like playing a lot of these jams, but when he said that Rob Zombie is playing, and I am a big Rob Zombie fan, I said I'll do it if I play with Rob Zombie. That went very well. We kind of just stayed in touch. I said, 'If you ever need someone for your tour, I will be there for you.'" Glam-Metal.com: Let's talk about your new instrumental solo album that comes out September 13, "Songs for Sanity". What inspired you to do another album, what kind of style is it? John 5: "It is a follow-up to my first instrumental album, 'Vertigo'. I am looking forward to it, because on this album we have special guests Steve Vai and country legend Albert Lee. I'm excited because the first one did very well. It is just crazy guitar playing. I am playing for the love of music, pretty much." Glam-Metal.com: Now, I hear it has a little country twang in it. John 5: "Yeah! It is really heavy rock on one side, and on the other side it has a country twist to it. I think a lot of people will like it because of the diversity on it. It is not the same old thing. Every song is different. It is really fun, and people like it and I'm a bit surprised by that. I did an autograph signing at Ozzfest recently and there was a bunch of goth kids there and then there were kids who were totally into guitar playing and they said they wanted to meet me. It was cool. I met such a wide range of people." Glam-Metal.com: You have also played in the DAVID LEE ROTH band. What was it like working with him?

John 5: "That was my lifelong dream. All I wanted to do was play with David Lee Roth. I was a big fan of VAN HALEN. It was exactly what I thought it was going to be. He was so Mr. Rock Star, and that was great. He wanted the best of everything, he wanted everything right. It was all about David Lee Roth. It was great because he is the king. He never let down his 'star' vibe, which I liked, and I would never have changed that for the world." Glam-Metal.com: Now Rob [Zombie] has said he enjoys playing second stage [on Ozzfest] better than the main stage. How do you feel about this? John 5: "The main stage is just horrible. People are in their seats before they see IRON MAIDEN or BLACK SABBATH. It is so hard up there just giving it your all with people just sitting there. All the kids who are at the second stage are just crazy. It is nuts. It is great to see all the different age groups there." Read the entire interview at Glam-Metal.com. I just want to learn and learn and learn. I never want to be in a situation or a session where I don’t know how to play something. When I am on the road and I can’t go to see a teacher, I learn from videos or CDs or books." JOHN 5 (MARILYN MANSON)Guitarist John Lowrey lives an interesting life. By day he is disciplined student of the guitar. He has a fondness for chicken-pickin’ and recently acquired a “killer” banjo. By night, he becomes John 5, lead guitarist for the infamous shock-rocker Marilyn Manson, whose latest CD The Golden Age of Grotesque, will be released by Interscope Records on May 13 followed by a headlining slot on this summer’s Ozzfest tour. Whichever personality he takes on, John’s one constant is his love of the guitar. He never stops playing, practicing, or taking lessons. With his guitar by his side, John sat down with us during a break in his Manson band rehearsals to discuss this passion. He played through the entire interview….How old were you when you first started playing guitar? When I was around 6 years old, I saw a little kid on the TV show Hee Haw playing the banjo. He was about my age and he was crazy! I could not believe my eyes. That’s why I picked up the guitar. I played in bars when I was in the seventh grade. Playing guitar is just what I have always wanted to do. I was ready. Were you raised in Los Angeles? No, I came from Gross Point Michigan to Los Angeles when I was 18. It was 1988. I didn’t know anyone at all. It was a crazy time. I slept in an office space. People from bands like Guns and Roses and Megadeth were around, it was a big drug scene. My money was stolen the first night I arrived in town!Did you begin working right away?Yes, luckily I started working very quickly. My first professional session was with Robin Zander (vocalist) of Cheap Trick. Next I recorded with John Wetton of UK and Asia. Then the frequency of sessions started to snowball. How did artists discover you?Word of mouth I guess. People found out that I was quick and cheap. After small sessions like Wilson Phillips and Rick Springfield, I did whatever I could do. I did music for television shows like Baywatch and Flipper, I played on a few movie soundtracks, anything I could get my hands on. Then I started getting better gigs and better tours like k.d. lang for example. I have been working steadily since I was 18. Thank god. Knock on wood!

Did those recordings get released?Dave released it himself as the DLR Band. They all sold and that was it. Around 60,000 copies. Why did you stop playing with Roth?I actually still write for Dave all the time. We have a good group of songs but I gave up DLR to join Marilyn Manson. How did you get the Manson gig?I got off the road with Halford and my phone rang and it was Manson’s manager. They heard I was interested in the gig. Marilyn and I met at Gaucho Grill in Hollywood, he gave me the name John 5 and that was it. It all happened so quickly. Why were you so interested in playing with him?Because I knew that he was real. He is very smart and interesting. He is a true artist. It really is crazy playing with him. He is the real deal. It is a crazy life but the music and touring make it all worth it. I love being in the band. When did you officially join the band?I joined in 1998 during the recording of Mechanical Animals. My photo is in the CD artwork but I didn’t play on that record. The first record I did with Manson was a live album called The Last Tour on Earth (Release Date: 11/16/99). I was proud of that. There are no overdubs. Not one. What is the writing process like in Marilyn Manson? With Manson we (the band) all present ideas and he decides what to work on. He is a hard one to please, so there are lots of ideas flying around. He is very involved in every pluck, every sound. Is his intense involvement stiflingly to you as a player? No, it is really helpful. Writing and recording is a learning situation. It is a lot of work in the studio. As a producer, he has great ideas. I never knew he had those skills before I joined the band. For example, he may not know the specific chord names but he will suggest different chord voicings that really make sense. Have you grown as a player by working with Manson? In terms of sounds and feel, absolutely. 100 percent. What do you mean by sounds? Our goal is to create tones that don’t sound ordinary. We don’t want the guitar to sound like it is being played through a regular distorted amp. We have this joke were we say “it sounds too Guitar Center.” The sounds on his records are so unique; we do a lot of experimenting. So the experience is helpful when I do a session with someone else and they ask me to make it sound original, I have a whole host of sonic colors to choose from. And I know the frequencies to place them in within the recording. I learned all that with Manson. What types of effects are you using live?I can’t give away all my secrets! I do use all the basics – distortions, wahs, etc. I use lots of Electro-harmonix stuff, and lots of vintage gear. I have an old Fuzz/wah pedal made by Fox that sounds incredible. I also have a few weird one-of-a-kind pedals that someone made in their basement. Those sound great but if they break you are screwed! Ibanez made me a Lo-Fi pedal that sounds like an old transmitter radio…it sounds unbelievable. What about amps?I love recording with Fender Tonemasters…they sound so good. But on the road I use Laney VH100R Custom Chrome amps. Why the different set up?Live the gear really gets beat up. The Laneys really hold up and sound great. I don’t want to take my old amps on the road because they will get crushed by flying mic stands. And guitars?I play all kinds. I’ve been using Ibanez for a long, long time. They make great guitars. I have lots of guitars - Les Pauls, baritones, seven strings, teles, Taylor acoustics. I’m very proud to say that Fender is coming out with a Signature Model which I helped design.Tell us about that guitar. It is a Telecaster body with a Bigsby tailpiece, Seymour Duncan Hotrail pickups, a black finish and chrome hardware. And the headstock is very unique….Fender changed their headstock?Yes! They haven’t changed the tele headstock since the ‘50’s. I’ve very honored. It is a cool-looking, great sounding guitar. It will appeal to both country pickers and rockers. What are your strengths as a player?I try to do everything to the best of my ability. I’ll work on something until I get it right. I am a perfectionist.Any last thoughts?I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t play guitar. It is my life!
