That's all you can do."Re-energised with new album Ode To J Smith, out in September, Fran Healy is buzzing about how Travis have re-awakened their sound."Whether you think it's good or bad, or whatever, you won't be able to deny that our new record is interesting," enthuses Fran, 34.Fran feels the album is much closer to the band's more aggressive live sound."Some people have judged us on our - from a distance - gentle soft rock," he admits. "When they see us live, they go 'Oh! Right, that's different.'"This record will make people turn their heads in the same way and go 'Oh!' And I think that will shine a light on our other records, that we're not just this gentle band."Does Fran feel that Travis' angry gigs haven't come across on their albums?"Not at all," he insists. "Live and on record are two different things, and on record I'm a lyrics and melody person."We'll never make an all-out Radiohead experimental record, because I'm a melody addict. I love to try to write the best pop song ever. But Travis are still on a journey, and I'm a late developer in evolving our sound."Fran, his wife Nora and their son Clay, two, moved to Berlin last year.

"It's the best thing I've ever done, as it's the place to be," he says."It's a great place to bring up kids, and there's so many things going on there. That's because it's cheap. If you're an artist, you can rent a cheap studio you just couldn't afford in London. So you've got loads of creative people centreing in Berlin."
