4. "When We Were Young" –– Adele, Tobias Jesso Jr. & Ariel Rechtshaid
It was based on us being older, and being at a party at this house, and seeingeveryone that you've ever fallen out with, everyone that you've ever loved, everyone that you've never loved, and stuff like that, where you can't find thetime to be in each other lives. And you're all thrown together at this partywhen you're like 50, and it doesn't matter and you have so much fun and youfeel like you're 15 again. So that's the kind of vibe of it really.

优酷A great big fat love song, it's a 70s styled shimmery discoballad co-written with Tobias Jesso Jr. She flew to LA and recorded it on PhilipGlass's piano at Tobias's friend's nan's house in Brentwood.
It’s so nostalgic. I’ve been rehearsing it with my band, so we’re ready for whenever we’re going to bedoing TV and stuff like that. Whenever I do that song, I just cry my eyes out. It’s just such a beautiful song and I wrote it with a great artist. It’s aboutseeing someone that you haven’t seen in so long. It’s written in the future, like 20 years’ time, and then you see this person and because so much time haspassed and so much has happened to both of you, it’s ridiculous. And you get onso great. It’s just about enjoying each other in that moment and there’s alyric in it that says, ‘Let me photograph you like this,’ because it’s amazingand this is how I want to remember us. The vibe is incredible.
On 21, she came into sessions with Moleskine notebooks fullof lyric ideas. This time, she often started from scratch, summoning songs fromthe air. Her collaborators would play chords while Adele improvised melodiesand lyrics, sometimes in a single burst. "It's impossible to question whyshe's where she is once you sit down with her to write a song," saysJesso. "She was the first introduction I had to somebody who could singwords on the spot that wereactually really great."
