level 12
Daryl didn’t have a BIG ROLE in this episode and in fact the only purpose he really had during the whole hour was to showcase that HE seemed to be experiencing some kind of personalized inner struggle.
He was unsure about the decisions Rick was making and the directions he was given, and for the first time in a long time we saw Daryl hesitate and inwardly second guess what he was having to do.
Personally I didnt think he was questioning Ricks leadership because he only started to seem concerned about the plan AFTER he found out that the herd had split up and was now heading towards HOME - Alexandria.
Immediately after Rick tells him, Daryl becomes visibly and audibly unsure.
Daryl isn’t someone who is easy to rattle and his position next to Rick has always been solid, so the turmoil and fearful urgency in his voice wasn’t about him thinking that Rick was making a mistake but more about what the consequences would be if Daryl wasn’t there for them.
Yes, Daryl is a badass and a good asset in battle but his personality doesn’t match up at all with him thinking that highly of himself - meaning that this wasn’t about Daryl inferring to Rick that he could use him there but about Daryl feeling as if he NEEDS to be there.
It’s an unconscious thing that makes us feel that if only we were present during a tragedy, we could prevent it or change its outcome.
It’s not a rational argument, but then again neither is LOVE.
