Daryl didn’t have a BIG ROLE in this episode and in fact the only purpose he really had during the whole hour was to showcase that HE seemed to be experiencing some kind of personalized inner struggle.
He was unsure about the decisions Rick was making and the directions he was given, and for the first time in a long time we saw Daryl hesitate and inwardly second guess what he was having to do.
Personally I didnt think he was questioning Ricks leadership because he only started to seem concerned about the plan AFTER he found out that the herd had split up and was now heading towards HOME - Alexandria.
Immediately after Rick tells him, Daryl becomes visibly and audibly unsure.
Daryl isn’t someone who is easy to rattle and his position next to Rick has always been solid, so the turmoil and fearful urgency in his voice wasn’t about him thinking that Rick was making a mistake but more about what the consequences would be if Daryl wasn’t there for them.
Yes, Daryl is a badass and a good asset in battle but his personality doesn’t match up at all with him thinking that highly of himself - meaning that this wasn’t about Daryl inferring to Rick that he could use him there but about Daryl feeling as if he NEEDS to be there.
It’s an unconscious thing that makes us feel that if only we were present during a tragedy, we could prevent it or change its outcome.
It’s not a rational argument, but then again neither is LOVE.

And LOVE is most definetly the thing that made Daryl so frantic about going back.
Daryl: “Rick?
Rick: “I am here.”
Daryl: “What’s going on back there?”
Rick: “Half of them broke off, they are going toward Alexandria.”
Abraham: “Towards you?”
Rick: “We ran ahead, there’s a horn or something loud coming from the east. It’s not stopping.”
Daryl: “I am gonna gas it up and go back.”
Rick: “We have it. You keep going”
Daryl: “THEY are gonna need our help”
Rick: “You gotta keep the herd moving
Daryl: “Not if it’s going down, we don’t.”
Rick: “We risk them turning around. The bad there gets worse…..Daryl?”
Daryl: “Yeah, I heard ya.”

The emotion in Daryl’s voice and the crystal clear but still somewhat odd, personal fear on Daryl’s face, leaves the impression that there is a very strong pull simmering underneath his shaky obedience.
The whole thing just feels WRONG and it’s very obvious that Daryl just isn’t sure what he WANTS to do…
Yes, Rick ordered him and talked him away from his initial instinct to go back HOME but the PULL was still there and was obviously still weighing on him.
The other thing to consider here is that Abraham and Sasha hear the very same conversation as well BUT despite the fact that they too have a family back HOME, their reaction is nowhere near Daryl’s insistence to go back. In fact it doesn’t look like they even consider it.

Daryl: “Hey, we go 5 miles yet?”
Abraham: “Give or take some yardage. You got a reason for asking?”
Daryl: “Next intersection. We spin around and go back.”
Sasha: “The plan is to go 15 more.”
Daryl: “Yeah, I’m gonna change that….5 miles gonna have to work.”
Abraham: “The metric number is 20, that’s the mission. That’s making sure that they are munching on furry raccoons for the rest of their undead lives, instead of any of us…”
Sasha: “You want to go, we can’t stop you but without you they can stop us.”
*Daryl sees the ‘Alexandria’ sign*
Daryl: “Nah… I got faith in ya.”
Sasha: “Daaaarryl…”
Abraham: “Don’t do it…”
Daryl tries to weakly rationalize the choices he’s wrestling with and almost tentatively feels out Abraham and Sasha before finally making HIS OWN decision.
Both of them don’t like it and actively try to talk him away from leaving them.
They go as far as shouting after him as he drives away from them and speeds away towards HOME - towards Alexandria…and yes towards CAROL too.
A point to consider here is that most of the group is not even in Alexandria - meaning that the number of people, Daryl was rattled about not helping is rather short.
Not a lot of people are able to affect Daryl like this and not a lot of people would be so significant to Daryl, for him to abandon a dangerous plan, leave his comrades behind and defy Rick himself.

The only person in Alexandria that fits the criteria is CAROL.
As a Caryler obviously I feel in my heart that a big part of the reason why Daryl felt the need to go home, towards danger, is because Carol was back there.
Before you dismiss my opinion due to shipper goggles syndrome I have a whole lot of logic to apply to this scenario and prove my point without too much fluff (that’s for later)!

First let’s consider Daryl in Alexandria.
Alexandria, the town itself, didn’t seem to be much of a HOME to Daryl.
The only person he had more than one interaction with is Aaron and even the majority of that took place outside the walls and not in. There was nothing that indicated that Daryl had made any kind of emotional attachment to anyone or anything in Alexandria at all - in fact the only thing we know is that he wanted to be outside the walls more so he could bring more people in. Basically Daryl wanted to help create and expand the community by being useful and proving his worth BUT there has been zero indication about personalizing his involvement with anyone further. One can even argue that Daryl had become more distant with some people from his own group and was becoming more detached because he spent so much time outside the place he was now so eager to run back to.

The people in Alexandria;
The ones he knows are there - Rosita, Tara, Eugene, Maggie, Carl, Judith…and CAROL.
They are all his family and he would die defending ALL of them but this particular situation involved Daryl making a personal choice, defying a direct order from Rick and going against both Abraham and Sasha’s input.
What Daryl DID or tried to DO was BIG - it felt BIG, it felt IMPORTANT, it felt SIGNIFICANT in a personal and very emotional way.
Daryl struggled with this choice, the expression on his face was one of distress and uneasiness that lasted for some time - it seemed like he wasn’t comfortable in his own skin being where he was and the nervous energy just poured off of him. It was like HE HAD TO GO!

The Reason;
Everybody in the group has a ‘person’ they value in a more meaningful way than the rest.
Rick has Carl, Judith and Michonne. Glenn has Maggie. Abraham has Rosita.
Last week Rosita introduced the concept of having someone/something worth dying for and the way Daryl’s inner conflict played out in this episode, connected with that in a very poignant and powerful way.
This was about Daryl making a Daryl decision.
A decision that was led by Daryl’s emotions and Daryl’s instincts - without Rick, without group inference and led by something that he was feeling, not something he was ordered or assigned to do. This was all him!
For Daryl to TRY and even CONSIDER going, whatever was guiding him or pulling him away, had to be something BIG, something MAJOR, something he couldn’t IGNORE and definetly something PERSONAL to just him.
The whole episode mirrored a similar drive for a number of people.
David was trying to go back to Betsy.
Glenn needed to go back to Maggie.
Rick told Michonne “make sure you get back”.
The emotional hierarchy of relationships was a major theme here - going back to what matters most to you, the things you want to fight the most for and to the people that for you are “worth dying for”.
It was spurring everyone on their journey forward and that VERY MUCH included Daryl too!
He was going HOME, because in his heart he felt that SHE needed him.
And she did!

We can’t be sure of course but it’s very likely that all of this was transpiring very close to this moment;
Daryl was on his bike, racing home, feeling the need to protect her…his heart was pulling him!
And in that moment Carol was sitting on her porch, letting herself FEEL, as she clutched the cigarettes she watched him smoke back in Atlanta.
He was going back and he would have made it too…

The possibility of Rick being in immediate danger jarred him back to the reality of their world and he had to turn back.
The emotion on his face shows just how torn he was about making that choice - he hesitated, lingered and agonized for a few moments but ultimately the decision was the right one.
Rick needed his help and while the urge to go forward was most likely very strong, he had faith that Carol could handle things on her own for a little while longer.
They’ll come together soon enough and until then Daryl will have some time to reflect on why he felt he needed to go back so bad!
We know the answer and I think soon enough Daryl will too!CARYL On My Lovelies - The Best Is Yet To Come!
