鲁宾逊从小渴望航海，一心想去海外见识一番，他的愿望终于实现了。他到了伦敦，从那里购买了一些珠子、玩具等到非洲做生意，和当地土人交换金砂等贵重物品。后来，他到了巴西，他在那里买下一个农场，做了农场主。为了解决农场劳动力问题，他再次出海，到非洲贩卖奴隶。这次航海时，船在途中遇到风暴触礁，船上水手全部遇难，唯有鲁宾逊幸存，只身漂流到一个荒无人烟的孤岛上，在那里生活了28年……
本作品作者是丹尼尔·笛福（Daniel Defoe1660~1731年），英国作家，被誉为英国和欧洲的“小说之父”。《鲁宾逊漂流记》是其代表作，出版于1719年，表现了当时追求冒险，倡导个人奋斗的社会风气。
