The TV Junkies: Lately D’avin has been shouldering a huge amount of blame and trying to make up for what he did to John and Dutch. What’s his mindset like going into the finale?
Luke Macfarlane: D’avin is such a complicated guy and really does want to be a part of the team. I think so much of what he’s conflicted about is that he was a member of the team and well, he messed that up–or something messed that up. Then he joins this other team and he really wants to, but doesn’t quite know how to, fit in and do the right thing. He’s kind of a classic, tragic character in that regard.
What also makes this episode interesting is that he realizes that part of doing the right thing is keeping his distance and letting the team go through their own thing together. That is until he can’t help himself and finally says ‘I want to be a part of the team again.’

TTVJ: D’avin vowed to make Khlyen pay for everything he’s done to Dutch. Does he get a chance to do that in the finale?
LM: He gives it his best shot. I’ll say that much. Dutch at the end of this last episode thinks of D’avin ‘oh you never really learn do you?’ So he goes after Khlyen with his classic D’avin muscle over matter approach. We’ll let the audience see how that unfolds in the finale.

TTVJ: In regards to Khlyen, can you give us any more information on what being a Level 6 Killjoy means?
LM: I can’t really give you a whole bunch of information. I’ll say this adjunctly, it’s interesting because a lot of people have been saying, ‘well where are the aliens?’ They’ve been asking that of our show. Just maybe think of that in relationship to your question. If I’m being particularly cagey it’s because I’m being intentionally cagey. [laughs]

TTVJ: D’avin and John have had their share of issues as of late. What’s the brothers’ relationship look like in the finale?
LM: We’re farther along than we were at the beginning of the series but the team is a different team at the end of the series. They aren’t happy-go-lucky. They’re not fully formed. They are definitely in a position to see what happens in the next season. The team is not together.

TTVJ: Do you think that D’avin and John can ever successfully work through their issues and be a part of the same team?
LM: I really do. It’s been really interesting watching the episodes because it’s hard for me as an actor and I watch Aaron and Hannah, who I just have so much respect for. They have this lovely on-screen relationship as Dutch and Johnny and I think ‘Oh God, D’avin why can’t you just get along with everybody like that?’ I think D’avin really wants to. I just think he doesn’t know how to. I definitely think he and Johnny want to get into a better place.
I’ve always thought the secret with D’avin and John’s relationship is that he took the brunt of the beatings from dad when they were kids and that was really, really hard for him. I think he protected Johnny and on some level he’s a little bit resentful of that. That’s always been my interpretation of why D’avin can’t get as close to Johnny as he wants to.

TTVJ: Speaking of beatings, if we go back a few episodes to that fight between Dutch and D’avin. It got pretty scary to watch at times and you guys really went all out. What was your reaction to filming it and then later watching that scene?
LM: It was really scary. It was actually really scary to watch it. I remember feeling so afraid that the audience was never going to forgive me for trying to hurt our beloved Dutch. We had an amazing fight choreographer and he just did a beautiful job with that fight of making it seem really brutal. There’s always this question of how a 190 lb. guy can beat up a 100 lb. girl, even if she is a total badass. I think they did an amazing job of letting her be intelligent in the way she fought back and ultimately taking him down with her intelligence.
It was also a very intense scene to film. I remember when we were rehearsing one of our stunt doubles got seriously injured, cracked his head open and there was blood everywhere. That was overcasting the entire fight like ‘careful, you might crack your head open Luke!’

TTVJ: Will any of D’avin’s memory issues resurface in the finale?
LM: I think we’ve moved past a lot of that and come to understand them. We’re really attacking the storyline that has to do with Khylen. We’re really trying to figure all that out.

TTVJ: Alvis (Morgan Kelly) was arrested at the end of last episode. How does his story factor into the finale and will our Killjoys team be helping him at all?
LM: We definitely see Alvis in the finale and as we’ve come to see he’s related to the storyline involving the revolution that’s taking place. He’ll become an important figure in the next season as well.

TTVJ: Speaking of Season 2, while you guys haven’t been renewed yet, is there anything you would like to explore should that happen?
LM: That’s such a hard question. Michelle Lovretta [series creator] is so intelligent and I have so much respect for that woman. She’s complicated, she asks good questions and she’s funny. As far as what I’d like to see? I’d like to see her vision continue to be executed as flawlessly as it is. I’m really not just saying that. I think she’s so intelligent.
That being said, I’d really just like to see D’avin get along with people a little bit better. It’s hard, it really is because I’m like ‘oh I’m fun too!’ It’s the first time I’ve ever played a role like this and it was hard feeling like you were hurting people and ostracizing people and on the outside. I’d like to see D’avin get along a little more.
