Jintan HoulouArcheology Fieldwork Report1.time and SiteForm the middle ten days of April to May,2005, we the students of NJNU museology major wenton a archeology fieldwork in Jiangsu Houlou for a month.2.HOW WAS THIS SITE DISCOVERED?This site was on the way of a constracting express way,some archeologists found a large number of pieces which were belong to Han Vasr here,after the bulldozers removed the top-soil.So they initially inferred that there might be some cumulates in this site.3.EXCAVATION PROCESS A.Divide rectangular units:We chosen a site where there might be rich in cumulates,then wedivided it into 14 rectangular units,using American dividing method.The size of each rectangular unit was 5 by 5 metre,leaving 1 metre wide ridge on the east and north sides,then gave them serial numbers. I was in charge of the TN7E1 unit.B.Excavation:because of the top soil was removed,the first stratum is disturbed sediments bed,in this stratum, the earthiness is soild and fragile;the muddy color is burozem, containing large numbers of pottery pieces, which are different in size.During the wholeprocess, we took the big ones as speciments.When digging to the depth about 13 cm, the color of mud turned to chemozem, the earthiness became stickier and smoother. There were still some vegetation in the mud, so we inferred it was the second stratum, here we used theory of stratigiaphy to divide the stratums. In the second stratum, we discovered a vast amount ofchina pieces of Song Dynasty, but there were no completed ones ,we chosen some specimens anda whole Tail-end, then took photos of them , and drew plan charts. Still we found a piece of black-brick earth in the middle of TN7E1 between the frist and second stratums. Then at the north-west corner and north-easr corner,we discoverrd two cross hole. We went on digging, in the depth of 30cm, the immature soil appeared , the muddy color is yellow ,contained nothing ,so we stopped our excavation. In the end ,we pushed over the ridges.C. Paint Sort:After excavation, we nust draw plan chart of each rectangular unit.In the picture we should point out where the cumulates were and what artifacts the cumulates contained,at last ,gave serial numbers.4. INFERENCE Taking the 27 rectangular units to see together , we initially inferred this site was a building sterding,those regular ones are cumulates indoor; in the west part of this site ,there is abigger cumulates which is shapeless ,the erpertsaid, this was the cumulate outdoor .Then by somecopper cashed we found ,finally we inferred the time when the siteformed was Song Dynasty.
