Not Letting Diabetes Steal the LimelightWhether on tour or in the studio, Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) technology helps Nick Jonas better manage his diabetes.
When I was 13 years old and on tour with my brothers, I noticed a dramatic change in my body and my mood. I had always been a very upbeat person, but suddenly, I was irritable, constantly thirsty and started losing weight rapidly—20 pounds in two weeks! Something was very wrong. I felt sluggish, drained, like a balloon losing air. I was struggling to get through my tour and finally decided to make an appointment to meet with my doctor. She ordered several tests, including my blood glucose. It was then that we discovered that my blood glucose levels spiraled out of control to over 800—I was immediately rushed to the hospital. It was absolutely terrifying. The doctors told me I had type 1 diabetes, and it was truly one of the most frightening moments of my life. And my family was just as panicked.
After news of the diagnosis set in, all I could think about was whether I could keep making music and performing. To be told I had a disease I knew so little about was too much for me to absorb all at once. I didn’t yet fully understand how diabetes would affect my life. I would soon learn, though, that I would be living 24/7 with a disease that would touch nearly every aspect of my life. It wasn’t going away tomorrow; it was going to be with me forever.
I knew I had a lot to learn, and the more I did, the clearer it became to me that I couldn’t let diabetes control my life. I had to meet my diagnosis head-on with confidence and determination. Once I vowed to do this, I knew I could still live my life to the fullest. I also had a great support system of family and friends, and I certainly wasn’t alone in my diagnosis.
With my busy schedule and constant travel, one of the biggest challenges was keeping my glucose levels in check. I became familiar with Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) through a friend of mine who used the product. I was amazed at the technology. CGM doesn’t just show me where my glucose level is–it also shows whether it’s headed up or down, giving me the chance to take the right steps to get my level back in check1. Diabetes affects me very personally and intimately, and I want to be able to share my experiences and inspiration with others. I am empowered by my music and can use it as a platform to spread the message that diabetes doesn’t have to place limits on living an amazing and full life. While having diabetes can be draining, I’ve found ways to confidently manage it. Dexcom CGM is the best tool I’ve found to help me live the life I love.
