Asaresult,theskater’snewprogramswerepreparedlatewhichsomewhatimpactedherearlyseasonperformance.DuringtheGrandPrixseries,LifinishedsixthatCupofChinaandseventhatNHKTrophy.SkatingfansinChinawerebeginningtoworryifitwouldbeanotherdisappointingseasonlikethepreviousonewhenLiwentthroughagrowthspurt.
Itwasn’tuntilOctoberofthisseasonthatshebegantrainingunderHaijunGao.
“Atthebeginning,itwasabitdifferentasthiswasmyfirsttimeworkingwithamalecoach,”Liadmitted,“butitgraduallyturnedouttobegreat.Ithinkwearereallyworkingtogetherverywell.”
AftersixmonthsoftrainingunderGao,the2014FourContinentsbronzemedalistfeelsthatshehaslearnedmorementallythantechnically.
“Everycoachhasdifferentwayofcoaching,”notedthe18-year-old.“ForMr.Gao,heisreallygoodatvitalizingthetrainingenvironment.Weallgettiredduringtraining,butheknowsverywellhowtomotivateusandkeepusinagoodmentalconditionallthetime.”
AsLigrewmoreadaptedtothenewtrainingenvironment,shebegantogetbackontrack.InDecember,theskaterfromBeijingclaimedherfourthnationaltitleandfollowedupwithafifthplacefinishatthe2015FourContinentsinFebruary,whereshewasvisuallyemotionalafterherfreeskate.
“Itwasn’tbecauseIreallywantedtocry,butbecauseIhadaverytoughseasonlastyear,aswellasearlierthisseason,”Lirecalled.“Alothadhappenedtome,injuries,changingcoach,dealingwithpuberty.Icouldn’tmaintaingoodphysicalconditionandperformthewayIwanted.Afterthefreeskate(inSeoul),IfeltIstartedtogainbacksomeground.”
Lineededthismomentumgoingintothe2015WorldFigureSkatingChampionships,whichwerebeingheldinherhomecountryforthefirsttime.
“BeforethecompetitionIwasextremelyexcited,becauseyouhavethechancetocompeteathome,”saidLi,“butatthesametime,competingathomecreatedahugeamountofpressure.Ireallyneededtopushhard,andIforcedmyselftofocusontheicetodealwiththepressure.”
Listartedtheeventwithagoodshortprogram,finishingsixthwithascoreof61.83.Theonlyflawwasanunderrotatedjumponthebackendofatripleflip-tripletoe.However,herfreeskatefellapartandshefinished11thinthatsegmentandninthoverall.
“Actually,beforethecompetitionIdidn’texpectmuchonmyplacement,”Lirecalled.“IjustwantedtoperformaswellasIcould.IfeelIcouldhavedonebetterinthefreeskateandachievedabetteroverallresult.Icouldn’tseizetheopportunityofcompetingathome,whichwasreallyregrettable.”
Thisisnotunfamiliarterritoryformanyathletes,andLiknowsthis.

“ImaytaketheLutzout,”sherevealed.“Underthenewrule(30%basevaluereductionforanedgeerrorontheLutzjump),Imayeasilylosemanypointsonthatjump,soitdoesn’tpayout.”
However,tohelpbalancethescales,theskaterintendsonraisingthelevelofdifficultyofotherjumps.
