X Factor finalist thanks Simon Cowell as she makes West End debut as ‘Whatshername’ in American Idiot

An X Factor finalist who is making her West End debut said today she had Simon Cowell to thank for her stage career.
Amelia Lily, who came third on the TV talent show in 2011, has been unveiled as one of the stars of American Idiot, a musical based on the songs of US punk pop band Green Day.
She said: “Obviously getting into the X Factor was a massive break for me. I was able to go out as Amelia Lily and do my own stuff which will always be my number one thing.
“But I wouldn’t be doing American Idiot if it hadn’t been for X Factor. I was 16 and to be spotted by Simon Cowell opened up so many doors for me. I’m grateful for the experience.”
After X Factor Lily, who comes from Middlesbrough and now lives in Surrey, released three top 40 singles including You Bring Me Joy which reached number two. She was then asked to play the narrator in a tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat which she has just completed.
