Why You Should Be Pumped to Hear Jake Gyllenhaal Sing in Little Shop of Horrors

The buff, chiseled, elusive Jake Gyllenhaal as a bespectacled, lanky, dorky florist? Seems like a stretch. But it’s happening—he’s taking on the role of Seymour Krelborn in the special two-day revival engagement of the cult classic Little Shop of Horrors at the New York City Center this July.
The production will be Gyllenhaal’s musical stage debut, though he has already made quite a name for himself on Broadway (this year he captured audiences opposite The Affair’s Ruth Wilson in the dramatic play Constellations).

In Little Shop, we can expect to see Gyllenhaal in an entirely new light. The dark and funny show originally debuted off-Broadway in the early ’80s and quickly became a cult classic, which led to a 1986 movie starring Rick Moranis as Seymour.
The story follows what happens to Skid Row native Seymour when he discovers a plant that needs to feed on blood to survive. He names the plant Audrey II, after his floral shop worker crush, Audrey (who will be played by Ellen Greene, the Tony Award winner who played the same role in the movie). He also has to deal with Audrey’s abusive, psychotic dentist boyfriend, Orin Scrivello, a role captured by Steve Martin in the film, and with this go around, Saturday Night Live alumnus Taran Killam.

What will be most exciting about this limited run will be that we’ll hear Gyllenhaal work his musical chops with songs that will really test him, including numbers like “Skid Row,” “Grow for Me,” “Suddenly, Seymour” (watch a clip of this song above), and “Feed Me” (watch a clip from the movie version below). Truly, we’ve got an appetite for this one.
