Let’s face it, man-buns are still pretty edgy to rock, even if Hollywood’s A-list has worked it — Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, Jared Leto, Orlando Bloom.
But imagine being Jake Gyllenhaal and telling big name money producers that you want to rock the man-bun as the star of Nightcrawler.

Director, screenwriter Dan Gilroy tells USA TODAY it didn’t go down so hot.
“A week before shooting Jake said, ‘I’d like to put my hair in this man-bun (each time) before the character does something larcenous.’ There were people who didn’t want that to happen. But I was supportive of it.”
After all it was Jake’s idea to lose 30 pounds to play coyote-like cameraman Louis Bloom in the drama. And Jake’s idea to grow the hair long. Gilroy had envisioned a short, military hair cut. But a movie is a collaboration.
“Our process was, let’s try stuff. It’s an outlandish idea, but let’s try it,” says Gilroy.

In the end, Gyllenhaal’s hair was long, and it went up in the bun whenever he was doing something like illegally sneaking into someone’s house to film.
“It was a functional thing, (Louis Bloom) didn’t want his hair to get into the way,” says Gilroy.
Everyone won. Nightcrawler was a major hit. Gyllenhaal hit the awards circuit. Gilroy is headed to the Oscars for his screenplay. And the world got beautiful views of an awesome, functional man-bun (now view-able in Blu-Ray splendor)
