All tech companies, whether they make phones or laptops or cars, havetheir own comprehensive testing regimes to make sure their products are ready for you, In order to gain an insight into how this process works within an international company, WIRED.co.uk took a tour ofHuawei'sglobal compliance and testing unit in its Shanghai research and development centre to see what it takes to ready top-of-the-range smartphones to face the world. For Huawei, China's largest smartphone company, the testing period for each new-to-market device totals five months and sees 2,000 phones in total put through the wringer.

The first stop on the tour is the mechanical stress test lab, which is basically Room 101 for new devices. Within these walls, phones are put throughmore pain than the clumsiest human could possibly inflict on them. A machinecalled the Whirltone tumbling barrel tester sees each test model spun in agiant transparent tombola 100 times. Effectively this simulates the phone being dropped from every angle into every possible position from one height, after which it is repeated 100 times from a second height.

While each phone is dropped, an ultra-fast camera records falls at5,000fps, so that if damage does ensue, Huawei can use the footage to identify the exact angle and impact point that caused it.
当每台手机被抛下时，极速相机会以5000帧每秒的速度记录其坠落过程。一旦手机发生伤害，华为可以通过这些连续镜头识别出引起损害的准确角度和损害点。

Of course being dropped isn't the only way your phone can become damaged.Last year the latest iPhone made headlines due to people claiming that it bent when they sat on it. In order to avoid this fate, Huawei uses soft pressureequipment to test for similar problems in its own phones.
当然，手机受损害的原因不仅仅是跌落。去年，iPhone手机因被网友爆出“弯曲”一事引起热议。为了避免此问题，华为使用柔软压强设备对手机进行了检测。

It is of course highly likely that Apple employs similar tests of its own devices, but without knowing exactly what goes on inside its testing facilities it's hard to sayexactly what went wrong with the last iPhone. Each and every phone company has stringent measures for making sure phones that go on sale are up to both their own and industry standards.

As if that wasn't enough torture, the twist test clamps the phone both atthe top and the bottom and sees it twisted from side to side 500 times -- atest that WIRED.co.uk also conducts when it meets a new phone (albeit in arudimentary, handheld fashion -- and certainly not 500 times over). Also insidethe mechanical stress test lab are machines that test the button life and the connector durability. Phones are again clamped in place and then prodded repeatedly with stamps that look like pencil erasers. In order to simulateusers' real habits, each power button is pressed 200,000 times over the courseof five days and each volume button 50,000 times.

n terms of connectors, two different elements are put through the mill inorder to guarantee reliability to phone users for at least three years. Asimple in-out test makes sure connectors can survive average usage and a second"wiggle test" sees connectors moved back and forth every which way.This basically compensates for the fact that most of the time connectors aren'tpushed into ports at a specific angle, and that when connected, cables can betugged from funny angles.
为了确保用户至少三年的可靠使用，华为手机连接器在生产中会考虑两方面的因素。一是简单的进-出测试，可以保证连接器经受得住平均使用强度；二是“摆动测试”，让连接器在每一个方向前后移动，因为在大多数情况下，连接器并不以特定角度推进端口，而且连上之后，数据线可能会以各种角度被拖出。

除了人为原因，环境也是影响手机性能的一大因素。基于此，华为设立了一个专门实验室，内含18个巨型立方体，每个立方体内都有不同的微气候环境，可以检测到60度温度跨度内手机各项功能的情况。

Perhaps the most impressive testing room in the whole facility, however,is a semi-anechoic chamber that cost $2 million (£1.3 million) to build. The chamber absorbs reflections of electromagnetic waves and insulates again stexterior waves, in order to create a signal-clean environment in which to testthe radiation on surrounding equipment.
最令人印象深刻的实验室是耗资两百万美元的半电波暗室，它可以吸收电磁波的反射，隔离外部波形，营造了一个无信号干扰的环境，以此来检测华为手机对周围设备的辐射。

Risk can never be completely eliminated -- even though some of these test srequire 100 percent success rate to pass -- but be reassured that your beloved new mobile has likely been given the best chance in life by the company that made it.
