DreamWorks Reveals Animated Film Schedule, With ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ and Another Delay for ‘How to Train Your Dragon 3’
Britt Hayes | 8 days ago
Just last week, DreamWorks announced that it would be cutting 500 jobs and scaling its animated movie releases down from three a year to just two. At the time, it was unclear how this would affect the projects they currently have in development, but the company has just revealed an updated release schedule, with a few changes to note—in particular, ‘How to Train Your Dragon 3’ has been pushed back, and ‘B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations’ is back in development, but is still not scheduled for release.
Variety has updated their original report on the cutbacks at DreamWorks with new release information, which is as follows:
‘Kung Fu Panda 3’: March 18, 2016
‘Trolls’: November 4, 2016 (opens against ‘Doctor Strange’)
‘Boss Baby’: January 13, 2017
‘The Croods 2’: December 22, 2017
‘Larrikins’: February 16, 2018
‘How to Train Your Dragon 3': June 29, 2018
Although the company just picked up a Golden Globe award for best animated film for ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2,’ they’re still having some issues. ‘How to Train Your Dragon 3' was initially delayed to June 9, 2017, but has been pushed back an entire year—again. Similarly, ‘Boss Baby’ (starring Kevin Spacey and Alec Baldwin) was set for a 2016 release, but has also been pushed back.
Not on the schedule currently is ‘B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations,’ the long-developing animated project featuring the voice work of ‘St. Vincent’ co-stars Melissa McCarthy and Bill Murray. DreamWorks yanked the film from its original June 5, 2015 release date, but has put it back in development with no current release plan.
DreamWorks Animation chief Jeffrey Katzenberg has expressed that his focus is now on “making blockbuster films” and “going back to the basics,” as their plan to release three films per year proved to be a bit too ambitious for the company to handle. It’s definitely a wise idea to focus more on quality than quantity, as their current system appears to have been spreading the studio too thin.
