It speaks to the love that exists in families, the notions of duty and sacrifice, and our profound connections to other human beings. Was that sort of focus on the human stakes in even the most heroic endeavors one of the things that appealed to you about this film?Anne Hathaway: Oh yeah, for sure thats exactly what I loved about it. From the beginning of time, the reach to expand our world or move our civilization forward has always involved great sacrifice by a handful of individuals, who put the greater good over any risk to themselves. This film really celebrates those who are brave enough to do that. And Christopher Nolan saying that hes doing a project, that was first of all the thing that appealed to me about it (laughs). Then reading the script I thought, "This is something Im interested in." Then getting deeper and deeper into the story there was so many elements I loved: the family drama, my character, the themes, the cast, the idea of love transcending time, being able to shoot in places like Iceland.. everything about it was enticing (laughs). When we first meet your character, Dr. Amelia Brand, shes someone who views the world through a scientific lens. Yet, as the story progresses we see theres a lot more to her theres an emotional journey she goes on...Anne Hathaway: Yeah. The concepts behind this film can keep you awake at night, but the story is also a beautiful meditation on love. If you look at the human race from an evolutionary standpoint, you have to factor in love as a key part of the equation, and how this idea is woven into Brands experience of this mission felt very moving and truthful to me. I think its a brave and extraordinary thing that Chris has done in weaving the persistence of love into the DNA of this big adventure in space.And to be honest, when I first read the screenplay I didnt totally understand my character, and I didnt for quite sometime. Without revealing anything, something happens to her in the movie that I was thinking about, and I was thinking, "Wow, thats one of those things that changes you." And then she made sense to me as someone who goes through a journey, and I believe the journey she goes from is from arrogance and fear, to humility and openness. And I feel like anyone who has the courage to go on that journey is somebody very deserving of respect.Do you think that initial struggle helped in the long run?Anne Hathaway: For sure. At first, I knew what I had to say in every scene, but I didnt fully understand her and I didnt know why I had to say it. But I found an Einstein quote that really helped me. The concept was that the scientific and the spiritual can overlap, and I loved the idea of playing a scientist who is also a mystic. Once I understood that aspect of it, thats when she really opened up to me. I also was really interested in telling the story of someone who goes from arrogance and humility, and that was hinted at in the screenplay,Parajumpers Homme, but it took a few readings for that thread to emerge as something I should really focus on. Shes young and inexperienced when you first meet her, and she hasnt really had a chance to live life, its all been very theoretical. When she goes on this mission, its kind of the first living shes ever done, and its where her growth begins.Your spacesuit weighed in at around 30 pounds, not including the wetsuit you had to wear underneath for water sequences. How did you find that challenge?Anne Hathaway: After trying to run about 10 feet in the pool, I immediately called an ex-Navy SEAL I know and said, "You need to get in the gym with me." When we were shooting the water scenes, Matthew and I kept saying to each other, "This may be tough, but we look cool," (laughs). But I loved my spacesuit, from the second I put it on. I remember putting for the first time and I just lit up, I felt so happy and I felt like a kid it felt like Halloween instantly (laughs). But they were challenging, and it actually became a part of why I loved the movie it wasnt easy, and you had to earn the right to wear it. In my first fitting after wearing it for an hour I did think, "Ooh, this is heavy. Its pinching here."And I realized I wouldnt be able to slack off in the gym, because at first I was like, "Im not wearing a catsuit in this one!" (laughs). But I did have to workout just as hard on this just to be able to stand up in the spacesuit. But you love those inherent challenges, and then the suit became its own character. Theyre not easy, theyre not easy in real life, so there would be moments where you would have to take your helmet off or gloves off and it would stick, and you would have that in the moment I always thought that raised it dramatically for me in a way.And then working closely with Matthew McConaughey, how did you find that experience on Interstellar? Anne Hathaway: Its a real pleasure to work with someone who knows how to take their job seriously, but also has a real light touch. And Matthew never lost focus, he never lost his connection to why we were there, but that didnt mean we didnt laugh! Hes full of amazing stories, hes someone who has really lived a wonderful and very varied life, and so I loved hearing the tales from how he got to be where he is now. And hes a kind person, and on a set that could have felt tense, I found that he was wonderful at putting me at ease.
