The Complete Listing of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart - 1940 to today Billboard charts started a Top 100 on 2 November 1955 (chart date, issue date was 12 November 1955). The chart was based upon sales, airplay and jukebox plays. Before that, from 1940, billboard magazine had published a chart countdown of some description and this became the Hot 100 on 10 August 1958 (again, chart date. The issue date was 4 August 1958). I intend to post the charts below from 27 July 1940 to the current charts, whenever that might be.

The charts I'll post are the Single Charts, and not Albums, R&B, Jukebox, or Novelty Record charts. Yes, it seems Billboard had a chart for everything (although I might have made up the Novelty record one) The format goes something like this. Week Ending DATE This has been changed from the date of issue (Wednesday, then Thursday from 1958) to Saturday to tie in with the other charts in my Database. That way it is far easier to search for a position by week or work out which records where on both charts, etc. Only for the number 1, the size and color change. You have no idea how hard that turned out to be! Weeks on chart so far - Last Week - This Week - Artist - Title Now back to the smaller size for the rest of the chart, and a few differences appear. Weeks on chart so far - Last Week - This Week - Artist - Title - Peak - Entry Position - Entry Date - This Week On the UK Singles Chart Please note. My database is record title, artist name and date sensitive. This means that if one is different between the UK and the USA charts, the 'This Week in the UK' column will be blank when it should have a position. I will try and correct this as time allows, but this is just a guide for now. And lastly . . . . Billboard own the (c) for these charts. I do not. I have them in my database for personal home use, and do not wish to make any money out of them. I just want to make people happy. If Billboard has a problem with me posting these here, they can email me (see below) and I will discuss the matter with them. That said, they might well stop me from posting these and then that's it - they'll be gone for good. If Billboard tell me not to post, then I will stop. Until then a word of advice. Save this thread fairly often - you never know when it might be gone for good . . . . But, until it is, lets start with 1940

NOTE: As always, dates are the Saturday of the publishing week of the chart. Billboard Charts where published on the Thursday, two days before the chart date, after the start of the Hot 100 in 1958. Before that, the date was about a week and a half before publication of the magazine.
