5 Best Cast Fincher Actors
By R. Duval | October 16, 2014

Almost twenty years after his first film Alien³, David Fincher is now one of the most acclaimed and successful Hollywood directors. Yesterday marked the 15th anniversary of Fincher’s third movie, and arguably his most iconic, Fight Club.
Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter were fundamental and incredible in it, but it was mostly Brad Pitt playing Chuck Palahniuk’s Tyler Durden that made us wonder about consumerism, self-control and much more.
But what makes Fincher so special? By definition, a director controls actors. A filmmaker doesn’t necessarily puts words in the talent’s mouth, though. It’s not about what the character says, but how they do so. As Tyler Perry mentioned on a recent Gone Girl interview, it’s all about nuance.
When an experienced and singular director such as Fincher finds his protagonist for a new movie, the actor grows professionally while filming. The opposite is of course also true, with Fincher improving as a filmmaker as he interacts with these diverse actors.
In this list I name five examples of how Fincher best helped actors to transform into these remarkable characters and how they fit perfectly with the role.

Brad Pitt – Fight Club
Pitt was already an established Hollywood sex symbol before ever working with Fincher for the first time on Se7en. Thanks, Thelma & Louise and Interview with the Vampire. The Golden Globe winning (for Twelve Monkeys) actor ended up becoming one of Fincher’s favourites, playing also the reverse-aging Benjamin Button.
But Tyler Durden was a perfect fit for Fight Club. Edward Norton’s alter ego is meant to be the attractive and smart man you, a regular guy, want to be. In Durden’s own words, “I look like you wanna look, I fuck like you wanna fuck, I am smart, I am capable, and most importantly, I am free in all the ways you are not.” The clothes, the attitude, the philosophy. Durden was already an incredible character but Fincher made it into flesh.

Jake Gyllenhaal – Zodiac 【杰克.吉伦哈尔——《十二宫》】
Donnie Darko was Gyllenhaal’s first noticeable role, when he was still a young adult, and it has the kind of vibe he’s been experimenting with again in his recent years. Zodiac, Brothers, Prisoners, Enemy and, even more recently with Nightcrawler, all are suspense-filled dramas, with top-notch performance from the LA native.【唐尼.
It was with Zodiac though where Gyllenhaal landed in detective / investigative journalism territory. He’s done outstandingly well in it, so please let there be more.【不过吉伦哈尔投身侦探/调查类电影却是始于《十二宫》。他在其中的表演精彩绝伦，所以，请多多参演这类电影/角色吧】

Jesse Eisenberg – The Social Network
Eisenberg had done a few films before The Social Network, so every movie fan already knew what his usual roles were like. Shy, awkward, quiet, smart, at times holier-than-thou geek. I’d say more people know how Eisenberg behaves in real life than how Mark Zuckerberg does. As a Harvard tech who initially created a website for rating campus women, though, it’s not too far a stretch to say Zuckerberg was similar to Eisenberg’s roles.
So it was already a fit. Needless to say, movie Zuckerberg is the ultimate smug nerd. Condescending, arrogant and a smartass. Like Rooney Mara’s character says in one of the most memorable dialogues of the movie, “you’re going to go through life thinking that girls don’t like you because you’re a nerd. And I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, that that won’t be true. It’ll be because you’re an asshole.”

Rooney Mara – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Like Brad Pitt, Mara has also worked with Fincher more than once. She played Jesse Eisenberg’s ex in The Social Network, where they shared that killer first scene. Regardless, Mara was still only one regular, good-looking actress, who has worked with Fincher.
But then she was cast as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The Swedish book was already a worldly phenomenon and Mara’s mentioned her friends’ reactions in the Blu-ray extras about her landing the role. Due to her looks, people always assumed she’d play the missing woman, so when the actress explained she’d play “The Girl,” everyone was surprised. But Mara was confident.
It required a complete visual transformation. The role was incredibly challenging and Mara magisterially delivered. Playing Lisbeth led to an Oscar nomination. A perfect example of how Fincher helped an actor blossom.

Rosamund Pike – Gone Girl
Pike had a similar road as Mara, though she’s more experienced. This time, Fincher needed Amazing Amy. The perfect, incredibly intelligent, America’s sweetheart Amy Dunne. Or at least that’s what the media told us.
From Pike’s first scene and monologue in Gone Girl, you can tell she’s not just a random actress cast to play the new Fincher. He knows better. Pike’s voice and Amy’s confidence are a flawless pair. And despite playing the romantic interest (even a “Bond girl”, mind you) in action movies ofttimes, here in Gone Girl, Pike shows how complex and layered a character can become given an intriguing plot and masterful directing.

最后特别向我喜欢的凯文.史派西在《七宗罪》里精湛的表演致敬：Hors concours: Kevin Spacey in Se7en. Spacey was soon to become an Oscar winner (!) before working with Fincher, also in 1995, thanks to The Usual Suspects. In Se7en he plays the misanthrope and cynical serial killer and, despite being introduced only at the end of the movie, he completely steals the show.

The End
