Jeremy Lin was acquired by the Los AngelesLakers this past offseason to be a major piece of their rotation, but they werestill hoping that Steve Nash could come back and start at point guard.Unfortunately, Nash went down for the season very quickly which immediatelyforced Lin into the starting lineup and made expectations skyrocket for him asfar as running the offense and providing a scoring lift.

1. Get Back to Being Aggressive with theBasketball
One of his main issues early on in theseason has been lacking the aggressiveness that he had with both the New YorkKnicks and Houston Rockets when he was on the court. He’s still getting used tohis new role with the Lakers, but he needs to play the way that has given himthis opportunity to start in L.A. It’s a completely different situation playing alongside of KobeBryant, but Bryant can’t do it all by himself.
Lin has averaged 10.8 points, 5.0 assists,and 2.6 rebounds per game so far this season, and those numbers simply aren’tgoing to cut it. He’s shooting 37.8 percent from the floor overall and 33.3percent from behind the arc. It seems that he is hesitating to make anyaggressive moves or take any aggressive shots this season.
Switching teams is always a difficultthing, but Lin has to understand that his team is counting on him to step up asa leader. Bryant is going to do a bulk of the scoring, but he can’t do it allby himself. Lin has to be more aggressive with the ball and put some points onthe board like he has in the past.

Jeremy Lin exploded onto the scene with theNew York Knicks due to his confidence in his game and making the most of anopportunity. He hasn’t done that yet with the Lakers, and he needs to figureout how to get back to that type of basketball. The Lakers want him to playwith confidence in his ability to core, and they don’t want him to hesitatebefore taking shots.
The Lakers brought Lin in to be alegitimate number two scoring option, and hesitation is not something thatscorers can afford to do. It will be interesting to see how he plays over thenext couple of weeks as he continues to gain more experience, but right now hesimply isn’t playing with nearly enough confidence.
As he continues to grow more comfortable ishis new role on a big stage, he should get much more efficient. Learning how toplay alongside of Bryant and when to be aggressive with your own shots isdifficult. Lin will figure things out moving forward with the Lakers.

3. Improved Shot Selection
Quite simply, the shooting percentages thatLin has put up so far this year have been bad. He hasn’t been able to get thetype of shots that he needs, and part of that has been the hesitation that wasmentioned in point two. There is no denying Lin’s ability to shoot thebasketball, but it’s hard for anyone to make shots when the defense is in theirface.
Lin took good shots for the most part inhis breakout season with the Knicks, and he got open looks with the Rockets aswell. He is facing more pressure from opposing defenses from this year due tothe lack of talent on the Lakers’ roster as a whole.
If he wants to begin living up to thepotential that he has with the Lakers, he will need to step up his shotselection. He can’t afford to settle for contested three-point shots ormid-range shots, and he needs to focus on getting to the rim like he did in New York and Houston. Assuminghe begins working on both of those things, he should be able to begin turninghis season back around.

4. Calm Down and Stop Changing Game
Through the Lakers’ first five games thisyear, Lin has yet to play the game that made him successful over the previousthree seasons. He has been a much different point guard, and has not been theaggressive scorer and playmaker that made him his big contract.
The Lakers desperately need him to figureout how to play his game alongside of Bryant, and it really won’t be that hard.Instead of pulling up for three or a contested mid-range shot, Lin needs to puthis head down and get to the rim. Once he gets into the lane, he can eitherfinish or dish out for an open look.
Los Angeles may not have a ton of talent on the roster, but they do haveplayers around the arc that can shoot. Lin needs to use his ability to get intothe middle of the defense to his advantage and get his teammates open. If he’sunable to do that, then the acquisition of Lin will end up being a completebust for the Lakers.

5. Become More of a Leader on Offense
Perhaps the main thing that the Lakers needLin to do is become more of a leader on the offensive end of the court. Bryanthas been taking over those duties, but he hasn’t been doing a very good job ofit. Lin is the point guard, and as such needs to be the guy running themajority of the offensive sets.
It’s hard for any player to be the leaderof the offense when Bryant is on the floor, but that has to be something thatLin does. There are multiple ways that he could be more of a leader, but hesimply can’t afford to keep deferring to Bryant every time he brings the ballup the court. Los Angeles needs him to turn things around and get back to putting up his ownsolid numbers.
That being said, this season is going to bea nightmare all year long for the Lakers. Lin is a talented player that hasn’tfigured out his role, and isn’t even close to what they were hoping for. LosAngeles can still hold onto the hope that he will figure out what he’s supposedto do and how to fit his game into the Lakers’ system.
