Asko Kallonen asks when he plays His Infernal Majesty-music the first time to me. It was a cover from Chirs Isaak’s song Wicked Game.- Great singer and otherwise also very nice version of the song, I said. Who these guys were?Kallonen told that he had found the tape from the middle of the other demos and he would call this Ville Valo if I would also like this song. I had worked as the BMG press officer and I had done some promo with Finnish and also foreign bands. This His Infernal Majesty could be the second publication for the new Terrier-cd brand. A week later a guy with weird hippie fur coat came into the office at our request. He was smoking the whole time. My questions of His Infernal Majesty history and future made the young artist laugh. The answers to all questions were either “I don’t know” or “I don’t care”.Do you remember that time Ville? You were already a rockstar because of those clothes.- I remember something. Clothes were very important thing. I was scared of you but I also respect you, like all the other guys. You had so much more experience than we did. The frontman of the band was shy and little bit weird. Other members of the band were not so normal either .The bassist could walk in a city wearing just underpants. The drummer had sneakers which sole had almost loosened and the guitarist didn’t say anything ever. Other thing that connected these guys besides music was that they didn’t have ever money. When His Infernal Majesty became HIM their music started to interest others than Finns. The band name was a little problem in some places (for example in Singapore) because it indicates to the Devil.

At this times from HIM’s music marketing was taking care of only one eager press officer (me). I sent band’s music to all over the world and asked to fax back a paper where they would announce if they were interested to publicize the cd. I got back five “Yes” papers. The leaders of the record company didn’t have belief into these young hard-rock men. But German GUN-company was interested of the band and came to see them to Tavastia. There Mr. Valo said to this German man only “Hello” and after that said in Finnish “Well, what else I should say – praise me?” The band (or Ville) was so interesting that even after first publication the reporters were whispering. It was the right time to practise interviews. Ville had done some TV and radio interviews with poor results. He didn’t bother to answer aloud and he didn’t even look where the mike was. You couldn’t hear anything what he was saying.We went to a bar and bought drinks and sat down. I suggested that I ask 10 the most stupid questions that you can imagine and he has to answer to them very suitable way, look into eyes and speak good Finnish. Then we had this big argument. Ville shouted that I can’t be so stupid and that I can’t ask that question. I shouted that now I will write a mean article about you because you are so spiteful person. We kept shouting quite a long time and when I went to sleep I was thinking that there was no sense in this at all. In the next morning Ville had a radio interview and it went really good. One significant factor for the band in the beginning was that Welldone-company’s legendary Tiina Vuorinen was taking care of the sale of the band’s gigs. In the first gigs HIM tried to develop for themselves a reputation of wild rockmen by smashing hotel rooms. They stopped doing it when they realized that they get more money if they don’t break hotel rooms. What did you think of Tiina, Ville? The woman had been with Hanoi Rocks all these years.- Well, she seemed like a very dubious swindler. She got these gestures that she had seen the world. We were in a shock in the beginning.Vuorinen is still working with the guys; I guess that she was honest enough after all. When Tiina came along Him started to get considerable warm up gigs, for example with ZZ Top in Helsinki hockey arena.Do you remember when you called me from the hockey arena? You had a little panic there.- Oh yes, we did call to you. What was the matter? Something broke during the gig but I don’t remember what it was.Well, at least a drumstick broke. And then you had to wait for a soundcheck quite long time in a cold locker room. You were also very hungry at that moment.- Now I remember. You brought food for us from a McDonald. We almost starve and freeze to death. I almost felt like crying.

Food has been in a very important role in the band’s history. The keyboard player Antto was a professional cook. That inspired one magazine and they decided to put the guys to cook and do an article about that. Mige was also there and the magazine got really obscene and provocative story of it. The guys had said that they eat little children for a breakfast among with other things. Very good publicity! I have experienced a lot with the guys, for example a competition called “you don’t dare to pee in my pocket” but the most memorable thing was in my birthday many years back. Ville had done with Antto a lovesong to me for a birthday present.Where did you get this lovely idea? - Oh yes, the song name was “Aivan Ihanaa” (Absolutely wonderful). You inspired us to do that! Our composition name was “Kakkosnelonen”. We did later same kind of songs to other girls because we didn’t have ever enough money to buy a present. Wow! There must have been girls like me all over the city.Just before my birthday was Ville’s 19th birthday. His friends had organized Ville to see Type O Negative in Tavastia and Tampere. The idea was to meet the great Peter Steel and maybe even give him HIM’s music.- I didn’t get to meet him but I heard that someone managed to smuggle our ep into backstage, Ville remembers.
