Poor Tang Wei! The 28 year-old actress, who starred in Ang Lee's ascetically unashamed sex-thriller 'Lust, Caution', has been blacklisted in the Chinese media. Television channels and media agencies have been told not to use the star's image, even though Tang has a 6 million yuan contract as the face of Ponds in China. It looks like the authorities are doing there best to ruin Tang Wei's career, after she appeared in a film they don't like. The Chinese government have criticised Ang Lee's film for depicting a steamy relationship between a Chinese student and a Japanese spy with too much sympathy. And they are taking out their wrath on the wonderful actress, who won a Golden Lion at this year's Venice Film Festival, for her subtle and troubling portrayal of a 'sleeper agent' in Japanese occuppied Shanghai. We think this is a terrible (though not entirely surprising) move on the part of the Chinese government, who should be trying to modernise their image. It reflects a total misunderstanding of Lee's movie (one of the best spy thrillers around), for a start. Our only consolation is that Ang Lee has come out in defence of Tang Wei.The Oscar winning director (his films range from 'Sense and Sensibility' to 'Brokeback Mountain') has won a place in our hearts for his vocal support of his actress in the face of officialdom. Ang Lee is our kind of guy.http://smalltalk.blogs.allocine.fr/smalltalk-154967-our_kind_of_director_or_the_story_of_ang_and_tang.htm
